So I mentioned in Patrick's canning thread that my plants are being eaten by hungry squirrels, and just watching a video of the guy who inspired my growing system- there was a grower who uses ultrasonic pest control sticks in the ground.
Sounds like they work pretty well- anyone try them??
If you have, what kind? Looks like I have to get them from Amazon, as most locally are for indoor use.
Since the Global War on Squirrels started about 2 months ago, we have had a whole lot fewer problems. You could call that the "trans-sonic pest control stick" solution.
May sound stupid but will they work if you tie them to a tree ?
the Squirrels are in the tree and play with the avocados , knocking them to the ground so they never have a chance to grow up !
they run across the power lines and do not live on my property .
I never tried tying a squirrel to a tree. That might work. I'll have to try that. Although I will note that a coon took what was left of a dead squirrel and left it draped over a branch about 20' up in a tree. That worked as a warning to the other squirrels to stay the berk away from that place. So this tying thing may have merit.
In reply to Dr. Hess :
Shooting stuff in my backyard is not an option.
A 1K FPS pellet gun with a built in silencer is available at Walmart for around a bill. Just sayin'.
doesn't help.
I need solutions for when I'm not there, too. I don't see them on my food eating stuff, so I also don't have targets to shoot at.
Which is why I'm specifically asking about this technology- it's there when I'm not. And it seems to work for others using my kind of planting.
If you have a handful of singles, a bucket, some wood, and aren't squeamish, the Pool of Doom™ is a surefire winner.
Get a 5 gallon bucket and a big bag of sunflower seeds from the birdseed aisle of your big box hardware store. Place bucket near squirrel active area. Fill bucket 1/3-ish with water. Pour sunflower seeds on top of water. Lean a board up against it, with some sunflower seeds on it.
They think you're an idiot and left out a nice big bucket of seeds for them. Jokes on you, tree rats.
So yeah. It's effective, cheap, non-poisonous, and quiet. Smells bad when you have to clean and reset it though.
The 10 dollar squirrel trap.

It's a live trap like that so you'll have to decide what you want to do after you catch them. You could probably have it drop into a bucket of water with a lid on it if you wanted a more permanent option.
Or not if you want a bucket of squirrels for office pranks.

Cut a hole in the lower portion and cover with metal screen , then you can see if you caught anything before it gets stinky !
My parents had one of those. Not sure of the brand but I think it was from Menards. It didn't seem to do much, and I could hear it. So it might not have been working right.
I've had it for a few weeks now, doesn't seem to help much.
The patching of the holes in my chicken wire has. At least for the larger animals.
