Because everyone on GRM loves a cool little project, I present you my newest one:

A Ramsey DC-200. One of the local Land Cruiser guys is moving, and there of course was no point in taking 100+ lbs of broken winch with him... so for a Civil War hero, I took that sucker off his hands.

By all accounts, this is a plodding, unstoppable monster of a winch. After the rebuild, I don't know if I'm going to resell it and put the money toward an 8724 or try and strap it to the front of the Cruiser. We shall see...
Cracked that sucker open, looks good.

We must go further...

Ok, we're not going any further than that. For some reason I can't get one of the shafts out (hur hur).
Anyway, I taped up the bits that wouldn't like grit in them, and sandblasted the hell out of them. How did people live before media blasters were invented?

Pretty!
After that i spent 30 minutes standing in the spraypaint aisle of Menards, trying to decide on a color.

Went with a blue that appeared to be close to the OEM color that was visible on the rare parts of the winch that weren't covered in grime. I think it's a biiit too blue. Oh well. Should look good anyway.
The motor and drum got painted black, to break up all of the blue.
Next up, new gaskets, new solenoids, and some amsteel cable. Wheee.
Worm drive, fairly solid... If it works keep it. The 8274 is better but, blocks most of your radiator. A winch in the hand is worth two in the ebay's.
That's a cool project.
For the past couple of years, I've been wanting to restore an old capstan winch. Not sure what I'd put it on, though...

That looks like an awesome project. I need to stick a winch on the front of my Jeep, but there are several things I need to do first.
That thing looks like it's built like a tank. Did you do any troubleshooting to find out what was keeping it from running? Is there anything wrong with it at all?

There was no solenoid pack. $120 off of the interwebs. Other than that, motor checks, gears check, bearings check.
Ramsey's user manual for this winch reads more like a service manual (I suspect because it's a more "industrial" winch), it gave all sorts of good information about testing various parts.
In reply to huge-O-chavez:
The 8274 has got to be Warns best offering. I've got one and it's bulletproof.
I'd take an old Ramsey PTO winch if I could find one.

Is that the Offut Auto Skills center I recognize in the background? One of the oldest in the Air Force, they used to have a framed photo of Gen Curtis Lemay and his Allard somewhere.
That is a cool project, look forward to seeing it on the ZAV

The oldest, so they claim!
Auto hobby shops are a fantastic thing. The fact they charge by the hour is incentive to get E36 M3 done. If only they allowed welding in the bays. And beer.

They used to have a welder on staff and if you had proven you knew what you were doing and they liked you, the would let you in a dry wash rack stall.
The beer, not so much.

They have a welding bay these days, but there's no engine hoist in there. So you're SOL if, say, you wanted to test-fit and build engine mounts. Grrrr.
I had completely forgotten about that place. I'll go ASAP.
