I've been kicking around the idea of setting up the aw11 with something like this:
http://www.devtoaster.com/products/rev/
minimal amount of gauges to make sure it doesn't kill the refresh rate, just basically as an auxiliary/replacement for a couple gauges I don't have in the car stock.
I'm wondering if I could get some negatives for setting things up this way, and also if anyone has any idea about using an obd1 to 2 adapter for the obd2-wifi component, and having it actually work and read pids.
I know, with nissans up to the early 2000s, at least, to get the newer scan tool, consult III, to hook up with the car through the bluetooth "Vehicle Interface", even though the car has both obd1 and 2 connectors, you have to go through the obd1 connector, plus an adapter to obd2. Wondering if I can feasibly do something like this..
any pros, cons, thoughts?
I think my own concerns would involve the iPad more than their kit. Not that there's anything wrong with the iPad, but given Apple's rather rapid product refresh plan, what's the usable life/support for this product going to be? Also, my wife has an iPad and we both have iPhones. Visibility in bright sun can certainly be an issue.
It sounds like a cool and handy tool, but I don't think that I'd want to rely on it while in-car.
^+1. Nothing wrong with it functionally, only downside is the complexity and reliance on a "toy" computer. To make the power reliable you'd have to hook it up to the car's always-on power (like a dome light) and it would increase the "turned off" battery drain. My fantasy car has a similar setup but with a custom/open computer that would shut down with the car and boot back up in a few seconds.
The iPad would be too big, IMO. I'd stick with a smaller foot print model (iPad Mini or Android 7" tablet)
Also, if you power the device from a standard power adapter connected to the radio circuit you'll minimize the drain.
The standby power usage of the Apple and Google devices are pretty good, but they will also power themselves off automatically when the battery is fairly low. With a quick release dock this should be a minimal issue (not sure I'd want to leave the device in the car).

Plus there's more if you search around.
thank you all, still researching atm
was thinking of buying an ipad/galaxy tab/something else android this week at newegg or from apple, but I'm gonna hold off on it for a bit because my NYC trip took more money than I thought lol
Will look into the 7", probably don't need the full ipad sizing just for a couple of gauges
mighty car mods did something like that recently

thats where I got the idea=] except it will be a race car, so it won't be using audio, so I won't have to worry about an HU or an amp.
idk, still needs a lot more research, and I hope to build the car with a challenge budget, so we will see if just picking up a couple more gauges will be more budget friendly and end up working better, though I do want to do it eventually in something for sure

Should keep you busy for a while ;)
BTW you have an AW11 and it's not in your rides?
i'd think a few cheap gauges would be cheaper and easier to do..

jhaas and I traded project cars (aka I got very lucky and Jon is a nice guy)
I went to NY two days after I got it and just got back the other day.
Going to start pulling it apart to do the fuel pump that it needs to get it running, taking pics this weekend=]
I have one pic of it in the backyard at night, and thats it lol. haven't seen it in the daylight except when it was dropped off
