I just got a cramp in my jaw from yawning.

You're kidding right. My iPhone has been through hell and back. Before my iPhone I went through about a phone a year and I have had this thing for 3+ years. I have dropped it on the screen. Dropped wrenches on it etc and nothing has broken. Otterbox FTW.

i had a 3Gs, and while it "worked" it got progressively slower, and the battery life got to where if it got used too much, it wouldn't even last all day till i got home. one of the software updates came out and then it took a full two seconds for the camera to open, even when being accessed by another app, it was like it just all started slowing down in protest, the fiancee's 3G did the same thing, but it never really worked right, her first one was constantly searching for signal, dropped calls, etc. and was replaced under warranty. the replacement wasn't much better, froze randomly, wouldn't play nice with certain apps, just buggy alltogether, even after we updated the software.
that said, i really like my 4s, no complaints so far, other than like a lightswitch, there won't be any more accesories for it in about a month and a half.
My wife has a Droid, gifted to her from my sister, who bought an iPhone. Now that the new iPhone is out, she also wants to get rid of the Droid ASAP. User friendly and robust, it is not.

Guess you just answered which side of that equation you're on.

Same with my 3Gs, that's why we switched to Android........my EVO 4G has been terrible the last 8-9 months or so...........and the SPrint network sucks, so back to AT&T.

Yeah, cause you have an Otterbox.
Also, the design of the 4 makes them prone to cracking--just a small tap on the corner can shatter it.

coworker went through a bunch of some samsung droid phone, they kept replacing them under warranty, so now she finally broke down and got an iphone 4s a week ago.

I'm on the "too broke to have any smartphone" side. Whichever that is. That picture makes me laugh because it accurately describes about 4 people I know.
I've had two Ipods, they were refurbished crap and broke within the first week of buying them. But again, refurbs are hit and miss and I know this, so I'm not attributing this to Apple. One thing I can attribute to Apple is my intense hatred of Itunes. Other than that, I know next to nothing about any of the products they sell except that I can buy something that does the same thing for much less, and that someone will attempt to explain how their iwhatever is better than my cheap pile of crap because they paid more than I did.
I know way more "normal" people who don't have any tattoos, are not ironic, and watch plenty of football who are more crazy about Apple products than hipsters. Most hipsters I know tend to shun away from cell phones, believing that they connect ones self to a job and reliance on technology.

Oh my god, no joke, what a piece of crap. I do have an iPhone and an iPod and iTunes is a scourge upon this earth. It is a horrible, bloated and yet somehow feature-thin piece of crap. It can't even monitor folders for new MP3s, a feature pioneered in the 90's with other software. It happily creates duplicate listings in its library if you try just mass adding all your music again. It doesn't have a 'now playing' list you can add to. It's unbelievably slow. The only thing I use it for is putting music on my iStuff and I still hate it.
My experience with Android (having used an Android phone since 2010) is a bit hit and miss. Updates for the phone software are a big issue for most Android phones apart from the Google ones, most are stuck on older versions and you're at the mercy of the carrier if you don't want to root your phone. I generally don't want to as I like to have at least a handful of computers that don't need care and feeding that way. In contrast, the 3 yo iPhone 3GS I brought over from the UK still gets the latest software updates minus a bunch of features.
I am probably going to look at an iPhone 5, but I'll most likely wait until Apple sells me one without a carrier lock. I have to pay full price for a phone anyway as that would be the only way to keep our grandfathered Verizon unlimited data plan (although I think this also means we can't move to 4G) so I might just port the number away from Verizon and tell them to take a hike.
The one thing I do like about the Apple iDevices (apart from them being simple enough so my wife can figure out how to use them all by herself, which is a major feat) is the infrastructure around them like cheap-ish speaker docks (if you buy them used), car radios that offer full control of the phone/iPod etc. That is simply not available for Android devices at the level it is available for iDevices.
Basil Exposition wrote: Why don't you just buy the $29 adaptor plug?
Which will be available for about $3 from the Chinese websites pretty soon.
I also think Steve Jobs would not have rolled out the iPhone5 as it is. It's a nice phone but it really seems to be missing the "killer feature" that Jobs always seemed to get done. It's a good phone, but is not really pushing the edge in anyway that I can tell.
The iPhone 5 is to the iPhone 4S as the iPhone 4 was the iPhone 3GS.
I think we'll see an iPhone 5S that'll have that cool feature, but I think in the meantime your going to see an iPad Mini.
Im starting to consider the idea of a tablet that has wifi and 3g capability, built in GPS, and 7" screen. Two many compromises in a single device to do everything I want it to.
Aside from yawning over a "new" tracking device...
I don't get the Apple > Everything else deal. I had an iPhone for a while and switched to Verizion before they were an affordable option there - so I got a DroidX. It does all the same things but a little differently and it had a little more whiz-bang here, a little less there but nothing was a knock-out "OMG! THIS IS SOOOO MUCH DIFFERENT" that I'd choose on over the other except on price alone. It's a little computer that I carry around.
What is the big deal?
My wife is getting the 5 because she broke her screen on her 3. I've got the 4.
I have tons of friends who USED TO have the Droids, but all but one have the iPhone now. That one waited to get the 5.
Personally I'm waiting till the iPad comes with the phone option, then I've got it all in one package!
Apple is making a 'Lightning' to micro-USB adapter but currently only selling it in Europe where all phones have to be micro-USB compatible or something like that.

Knock-offs will come state-side soon enough.
Take the big screen and keyboard off my laptop, shrink it to fit in the palm of my hand, give it micro HDMI and USB3 ports and let me pick the peripherals to fit the use/need. All these smart phones are is a way to package a general purpose computer so you can't use it for general purpose computing.
That is what I really want. berkeley the app store.
Sorry - I probably should have put this in the rant thread.

Guess what you have to do if you forget to tell iTunes to find album artwork before loading the music to your iPod? I decided to not type out 3 paragraphs on the subject but will summarize with this....It would take me 2 days of dicking around on the computer just to get back to where I am now with my entire music library on my iPod, only difference being I would have all my album artwork. Good job iTunes.
RE iTunes: Winamp is where it's at. It really whips the llama's ass. I used it to put stuff on my iPod nano; the only thing it can't do is update iStuff.

Plus you can use Milkdrop which is quite possibly the best music visualization to ever have been written for a computer.

Clearly you don't remember the days of Rabid Hamster R2 and R4.
I am clearly not a hipster, so I have no love for the iPhone based on style...which I also have none of. I am a business user and a scatterbrain, so I love the iPhone based on how it affects my life on a daily basis. I use it to look up stuff, track stuff, remind me of stuff, calculate stuff, store stuff and much more on a daily basis. It is my calendar, calculator, date book, to do list, encyclopedia, dictionary, camera, videocamera, photo album...you get the idea. It has become an essential part of my life, so a new one simply offers more ways to make my life easier. (Upgrade to Google Maps? Yes! A better place to store all my memberships cards? Yes! Faster downloads on LTE? YES!) For people who have no life and can survive with a flip-phone, more power to ya. I've got stuff to do and the iPhone helps me do it.
And I understand that there was a need to go with a smaller, more convenient and more capable connector, but I have amassed a lot of peripherals over the years. I was used to getting a new charger and sync cable with each new phone for many years, but Apple has been stable since 2003, so I got spoiled.
