Maybe after the 5 ships, fiancée might upgrade from my old 3GS she's currently carrying.

I will say that I've pretty much sold my soul to apple for the ease of use with the iphone. Until last year I didn't have A CELL PHONE. While mama was pregnant, we had the "you fought the good fight, honey" conversation. Right after baby was born, I was bored outta my gourd at the hospital, and started playing with mama's phone. In 15 minutes I was sharing pics of baby with family and friends. I've since berkeleyed with friends' and relatives' phones, and just haven't found anything I like as much as the iphone.

Maybe that's just my nature though. If I go somewhere and find a restaurant I like, I'll eat pretty much exclusively at that restaurant. If that restaurant makes a good steak, I will, more than likely, have that steak every time. I think apple makes a pretty awesome proverbial steak, and don't really see the need to berkeley with the program.

When Janel was looking for a smartphone, we were at the Verizon store trying them out. I told her "once you try an iPhone, all the others will just seem a little retarded". Yup. Great interface design.

And I'm still rocking the 1st generation iPhone. 5 years of enjoyment.

I look forward to seeing one in the store, but now that they've come back to using a metal case I hope the fit and finish is more like what I'm used to on mine.

On the geek spectrum, I'm about 10% off center, leaning toward the noob end of the pool. I've done plenty of stuff with computers. Every time I'm handed an Android device, I feel like I'm handling alien technology. I attribute most of this to the manufacturers and carriers creating their own little flavors of it. Still, I fumble around with it.

What I have enjoyed about my iPhone is that if I go to change something in the settings area it's all pretty well labelled and somewhat well explained. Further, the stuff that gets used most (airplane mode, ringer volume, ringtone, etc.) is front and center. It's not presented as equivalent to turning data roaming on or off, or pairing a bluetooth device. I don't have a problem digging around to do something really specific, but for a task that needs to happen with intermittent regularity, it's nice to open settings and it's right there.

As a designer and maker of stuff, I do like how Apple does some unique things with design and manufacturing of their products. Machining a billet of aluminum to make a laptop, all in one, or even a phone is something that wouldn't have made it out of the design department at Samsung, HP, or anyone else.

At those companies, the approach is how to make an inexpensive product have the appearance of being high quality or luxurious. Somewhere around 85-90% of consumer products are made by companies with this mindset.

Having owned a few Apple products, disassembling a few, and seeing how they live over time has given me the impression that their approach is to take a quality product and find a way to make it accessible to a mass audience.
