Yes, the 3g models have a real GPS, not the "we think you're somewhere around here" system my first gen has.

I've wondered - GPS is the big difference, to me at least, between the Phone and the Touch. Could you buy a phone (expensive I'm sure), not activate it and still be able to use it as a Touch with GPS and a camera? Or does it not work that way? I'm assuming it doesn't but thought I'd ask.

I don't think so. You had to activate old ones before they did anything.

you have to sign a contract with AT&T to get the 199 price. I don't know what the price would be without it, or if it's even available.
