I got stuck 4 cars behind one of these berkeleying diptards AGAIN on the highway today. For MILES he’s on and off the gas blowing black clouds. Drivers in front of me are braking every time he does it, and I can’t get around.

ALAS! A cop gets behind me, I move over, brodozer bro is unaware of his presence. We cruise along for another mile or so, and the cop turns off the highway.

WTF!? I got ticketed for 20% TINT last year, which came on the car when I bought it. I had no clue it was too dark, and never had an issue seeing out of/into it, but this shiny happy person can blind everyone behind him?

Is this E36 M3 illegal? If not, should it be???

Defeating emissions control devices is indeed illegal on a federal level.

I would imagine pumping an entire can of Great Stuff expanding insulation foam up his bro-pipe might be unlawful. I'm not suggesting anything...

*I’m not trying to be mister “I think it’s douchey, so it should be illegal.” Just, seriously, if you’re gonna write tickets for 10 over & tint violations as an excuse to try to see “what else is going on,” these shiny happy people should get one, too.

One of those idiots was pulling a float in the local parade last week. He thought it was cool to roll coal in a parade. He was so proud of it, he had his business name on the side of his truck. All of the parade participants behind him and the spectators lining the streets didn’t think he was very cool.

Probably something to do with proving he defeated the emissions systems?

Many cops / police department are all over collecting money from the populace, so I suspect if it was an easy (and expensive) ticket, they would be giving them out.

I'd vote for it being illegal. My truck is a diesel.

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: most places I been have some regulation on the books about "visible" exhaust. And it bein' illegal and stuff.

I've never heard of it being enforced though. And I live in Maryland, a state with a bit more blue tint in it than, say, Jawjah.

Florida does not do emissions testing, but we do have some statutes about “visible emissions” if i remember right. Cop friend was saying something about it at some point. Id imagine there is some statute just about everywhere that could be used to punish the berking D bags.

Even if its not the emission part, as Keith said, losing required pollution controls is always going to be a no-no.

Either way, it makes you a colossal shiny happy person if you do that crap.

If you are towing a very heavy load and gotta give it hell, thats one thing.  Doing it just to do it is another.

Coal rolling should be illegal.

Since at the moment my work truck doesn't have ac....... windows have to be open and coal rolling makes that hard

I've contemplated carrying a can of it in the saddlebag of my bike, if ever there was an occasion that I had to exact revenge....

It requires removing factory emissions equipment and modifying the factory tune which is a federal crime.

But local cops won't care about it unless it's a state crime, and if your state doesn't do emissions tests then it's probably not specifically against state law. I'd be pleasantly surprised to see any police act on it in a state with no annual emissions testing.

Haters.  Next you'll be after turbo rotary Mazdas with aftermarket ECU's running crazy rich fuel maps shooting fire out of the exhaust on decel.

Those idiots also piss people off and cause crackdowns on the entire industry. It’s a lot easier to go after the source than the users, so tuning shops for diesels and non-diesels are all getting close attention. It’s one of the reasons we stopped selling replacement ECUs and started putting such a big emphasis on emissions legal products.

The fireball shooting rotary guy, or the rollin coal guy? I want to read the story on it either way.

And stupid potentially ignorant question. Dad's 2005 Ram diesel will roll coal if you get on it hard. It is completely stock and completely unmodified in anyway to our knowledge . He bought it used 10 years ago. Isn't some of the coal just a nature of a diesel? Or is his truck odd in some way that I don't understand?

In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :

This berkeleystick was on-off-on-off the throttle, and I’m talking massive plumes of smoke that I have no doubt were making it really tough for the people in front of me to see 10’ in front of them.

Not trying to be a berkeleying Nancy. I was waiting for the opportunity to blow past him. I’m pissed the cop didn’t do anything, but that got me wondering if he had any right to.

Joke about “Joe-Juh” all you want. With a lot of privately-owned jails, and judges, sheriffs, etc who run on how many arrests and convictions they’ve got, the cops around here are constantly trying to figure out how a busted tail light can turn into a trip to jail...but this shiny happy person skates.

I'd have to find it.

FWIW, the only time any of my rotaries has popped/banged was when using an ignition cut flat shift, and it doesn't really make a "fireball".

My Volvo also pops/bangs sometimes, and it's 100% stock.

The question about dads truck was more of a general question about if stock diesels driven normally always roll a little bit of cold when you get on him like leaving a stoplight or passing somebody

2005 is "pre emissions" in the diesel truck world so some visible soot under load is probably normal. In 08, they all started using particulate filters (DPF for short) to catch the soot, and in 2010 the regulations tightened again and they all started using DEF fluid and SCR to drop NOx levels. There should be no visible soot from anything newer than 07. And the guys that leave huge billowing plumes of thick black smoke have removed everything and cranked up the fueling to run extra rich. They're a special level of moron.

I know a former TDIcup car that got a ticket for “visible exhaust” down around Bristol, VA.

So, it happens.  Even in the South... but maybe only of you don’t have a truck?

So it's like a performance exhaust on a sport bike? The Harley guys can run 6" of straight pipe as their exhaust and no one bats an eye but put a different muffler on a crotch rocket and you won't make it to the gas station without getting a ticket.
