I'm waiting to see if they're going to do with Irene and take volunteers from our local offices and send them east to repair the cable system. I will be one of the first to volunteer.

They would be followed by 7 and 8 truck fleets of more various electric company and tree company trucks. I'll bet that in the one hour I spent on the Turnpike that I saw 75-100 of these style trucks. Good luck to all but it looks like the reinforcements are on their way.
We saw a bunch of trucks heading north on I-95 here in Florida this morning. We've been on the receiving end of those convoys, and I have to admit that it's nice seeing people coming to help.

Yesterday the east bound side of I 40 through Knoxville looked like a tree company convention.

If the power goes out here in NE PA, I won't be able to work as I need a VPN.

Would it be wrong to use the generator to make beer cold and use a welder but not check to see if the cable modem can connect?

I'm kinda hoping it takes our east coast servers offline, that will cut my workload by half.

Since I'm considered "production-critical," the only thing that will stop me from going to work tomorrow is if both the main highway to work AND the back roads are closed. Glad I haven't fixed my Mustang's 4x4 stance yet...

What worries me is if the power goes out for longer than my home's sump pump's battery backup lasts. Up until two years ago my family lived on the hospital grid, so we always got the power turned on quickly. Now we live on a little dead-end street. I've already taken an inventory of my stuff for insurance, just in case.

I've got the generator under a little hutch on the deck and the cords ready, 35 gallons in jugs + 3 full cars, 3 tanks of propane, and 4 - 5 gallon cubitainers filled with water, + 2 more if it looks like we'll lose potable supply. Gutters and stairwell drains cleaned, everything absorbent up off the basement floor, lights charged, foul weather gear ready, and a E36 M3load of beer and scotch.

I have personally guaranteed the storm will not make landfall.

I have not the money to do any kind of preparation, so I guess I'm gonna wing it. In Irene both my current employer and apartment got flooded... hoping we don't get a repeat.

That being said, the Miata is on high ground. So I guess we're good... right?

My work would HAVE to send me out from relatively-safe Kentucky to the Lehigh Valley area right before it looks like it will get hit by a 'Frankenstorm'. If I'd been smart, I'd have tossed my Bug-out Bag in my car before I left to come out here, but I didn't. I hope the power outages aren't as widespread as expected... Being stuck in a hotel with no power isn't likely to be any fun...

"US Equity and Derivative Markets have announced they will be closed on Monday, October 29, 2012 and pending confirmation Tuesday, October 30th, 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy."

I may still be working tomorrow, but we won't be trading...

This is most likely because ConEd has been threatening to cut off power to lower Manhattan in order to save their equipment. Markets could still operate (since almost all the trading is done in NJ these days), but doing this keeps droves of people out of downtown.

Other than the unusual but normal closures for the deaths of Reagan and Ford, the markets haven't closed unexpectedly since 9/11-14.

We're on Level 2 restriction in DE, which means no driving except pre-approved waivers and emergency responders. Entire sea and bay coast is under mandatory evacuation, but not us. We've got food, water, and firewood put in, but no gennie. Raining hard, but not too windy.

Wife who works in quantico was told to not come to work today. I am at work.

Our "preparation" consisted of filling the tub for if the power goes out and well pump does not work, and buying 2 cases of water. Have plenty of food and propane and charcoal for the grills if necessary. The only thing I am really concerned about is if a tree falls over on our property somewhere, like if it falls across the driveway. I will then have an excuse to buy a chainsaw though, so there is that.

Also if power goes out we don't have a generator. Oh well. Thinking I need to at least consider picking one up after this whole thing blows over, so we can at least keep the fridge plugged in and be able to use the pellet stove.

We are far enough inland that I think most of what I am hearing are just scary trigger words that get people worked up, and its not going to be much more than rain and wind for us.

Here in Florida we are used to the Death, Doom, and Destruction forecasts, but this one is a bit different. It is huge, with very strong winds over 400 miles from the center. Combining with two other storm systems is unique. Yeah, it really is going to be bad. For all you folks that think a hurricane is exciting, ya'll are going to find out that sometimes exciting can be real scary.

I think another things we're seeing is a big change in emergency management. I mean, we've been talking about how our country needs renewed responses in dealing with natural disasters, but even since 9/11 we've had quite a few hurricanes that people just kind of blew off (no pun intended).

I think emergency management folks finally said "lets give it whirl and shut the whole place down in advance".

It is all a left wing conspiracy to make FEMA look good in the last week before the election. And you fools said the military didn't have a weather control machine. Now who had egg on their face?

A friend of mine who lives in Conn just told me his area currently has the lowest barometric pressure ever reported north of Cape Hatteras.

Here in Morris County, NJ (50 miles west of NYC) we have moderate rain and winds.
We have plenty of water, food and a generator (with lots of spare gas). I'm slightly worried about my basement but I think we'll be OK. More concerned about one daughter with hubby and kids in a more flood prone area. But they have plenty of relatives and friends near them (I'm 100 miles from them).

My brother was supposed to fly out to White Sands, NM today from Newark. That's obviously canceled.
