First I thought it was a sprinkler but unless it's spraying electrons I don't think so. Any idea? It says Preformer on the side of it.

Follow the wire until you find the former. If a red light is flashing.. Start running.

Have you noticed any ordinary vans roaming the neighborhood?

Maybe they're trying to "Pre-form" your thoughts?

The government is spying on you since they are spying on all of us. I doubt they are spying on you via that thing though. I bet someone can identify it, since the hive knows all.

OK, now I'm curious. Been searching on the web for a while now trying to find anything referring to it. I'd be curious to know where the wires lead to.

Could be any number of things, though:
1) Wireless dog fence?
2) Soil sampling equipment?
3) Part of a security system?

Sadly, searching the name (the googles thinks I misspelled performer) and one of those above has led to nothing.....

Considering it looks like it shouldn't affect anything of yours, I'd make it look like I accidentally disconnected it with a mower or something. If a new one gets put in, watch and take notes. If nothing happens, don't worry about it.

What sort of wiring is running into it? Hard to tell from the pic, that will tell you a lot.

Er, before you go hatcheting it off, make sure it's not part of some underground high-voltage-carrying power line installation. It would be pretty E36 M3ty for something like that to be there without being marked but you never know.

It looks threaded, have you tried opening it?

Kind of looks like one of those sonic spikes to deter rodents.

It looks like a resin filled splice kit to me.

Wires are spliced, stuck through the lid. The case is filled with epoxy and then the like is screwed shut. Instant, waterproof repair. Probably a phone line.

Call before you dig. Call the utility locating service. Tell them you are going to be doing some digging for landscaping. When the guy comes out to spray paint lines in your yard ask him what line it is connected to.

It's a fiber optic line splicer

I googled preformed but clearly overlooked the website in the results. My other thought was maybe it was an anode supposed to be buried in the ground.

If those wires are hooked up I'd leave it alone. At first glance I thought they were cut.

This makes sense! We have the option for Verizon Fios at our house so it must be related to this. Funny because the all before you dig guy didn't even ID it. Looks like the previous owner already took a lawnmower to it too.

Oh, you don't want to be using that. Reynolds puts RFID chips in the foil now, to help identify who is using it and where they are at all times.

Phone but I think it's copper not fiber. Water proof splice, the lower part screws on to squeeze the goo....
