After the challenge, the car will change to a more multifaceted build. Part of this is a radio. Will be driving headrest and door speakers.

Problem is that the area in the dash that had the double din stereo will be mostly taken by autometer 2 5/8 gauges. Not enough space left for a normal head unit afterwards.

Ive thought about the motorcycle lepai amp/radio setups, but i want a normal appearing stereo. Just thin. Like half the normal din size.

These may not exist. If they do, i haven't been able to find them.

Do they exist?

In my experience, .5 DIN was always used for accessories, like graphic EQs and CD or DVD players.

1/2DIN stuff is extremely rare in general, I once had a 1/2DIN equalizer but I've never seen a 1/2DIN headunit. My Corolla has 2.5 DIN slots and I have a 0.5DIN blank cover somewhere.

I found this, but holy E36 M3 that price! surprise

You might be able to DIY something. I'm thinking of the people who install a tablet in place of a "DIN" head unit. They have to have an amplifier somewhere. You might be able to find something small that you can tuck behind a front plate that just has a volume knob and aux port. I can try and find what I'm thinking of if that sounds close.

Gameboy: holy crap! Im not married to the idea that much!

Awsx: thats my backup plan. Only use a lepai motorcycle amp, and a 3.5mm aux cord to my phone. Id prefer to be able to use normal radio and usb drives, but not at a ton of added expense.

I have seen marine head units that are round, with a remote mounted box. Its an option, but again, expensive.

But pretty much no .5 din units for reasonable cost....

This might be the cheapest, compact-est answer. ($40)

It looks like its an entire "Head Unit" in the size of an aftermarket gauge.

This is exactly what I would suggest.  I have been looking at these for a bit.

Another option ($20!) is this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RH29CJO/

It's basically a bluetooth headset with a mini-jack output instead of the headset.  You stick it to the dash, feed it power, plug it into a line in on an amplifier, and you've got bluetooth.  You'd need to use the volumen controls on the phone though.

The only appreciable downside to that specific model is that you are limited to ipod/iphone as it must run through the usb controls (no bluetooth).

I found this while looking for hidden stereos for my Mini Moke:

Hideaway amp with small controller for dash

Looks like the marune receiver linked is about 4 inch diameter. I need to do some math. Or get out a piece of cardboard and a pencil....

I REALLY wish i could run any of the 4 din receivers i already have on the shelf. But maybe....

Thanks for the help y'all. Lots to think about!

Note that it requires a 3" hole, a typical aftermarket gauge is usually 2 1/16".  It also needs 3 1/8" depth behind the dash panel..  Still pretty cool, though.

Your gauges are 2 5/8? If they were standard sized you could use one of these http://www.ddmworks.com/Miata-Radio-Surrounds-by-DDMWorks_p_187.html

You could probably get the blank version and cut your own holes if you're so inclined

You could look for the old EQ/Boosters like this clarion unit I saw on eBay

Clarion EQ Booster

That one has a line-input.  Just get a 3.5mm to Stereo RCA adapter and you can run whatever you want.  I used to do that with an even older EQ booster to connect up my discman in the car to get a CD player.  There were a number of different brands that had eq boosters in the 1/2 din size in the late 80’s into the 90’s.

Good luck!

Why is the cool stuff always made by some questionable company like "Dual".  Alpine never makes weird stuff like this.  Well, they make plenty of weird stuff, but not this weird.

What brand would you like?  Kicker, JL Audio, JBL, Soundstream, Clarion, and others all make Marine Bluetooth receivers in the round format.  They just cost three times as much...
