Driving to lunch, I saw an M240i on a local dealer's lot. I of course looked it up - as one is apt to do - and its one hell of a car. A discount M2 basically. The price was $31K which I thought was about right for a 2017 BMW, but it had 85,000 miles on the ODO. I come from the days when cars rarely reached 100K, so that seems crazy high-priced to me for the mileage. Is that about market-correct, or is that a reflection of the current oddball market?  Or is that a good deal?

It looks like a nice car and I think the price is probably about right, but I personally wouldn't touch a BMW made in the last 10 years unless it came with a BMW CPO warranty that was longer than my expected ownership.  The BMW CPO warranty used to be really good - not sure of it still is.

Same here.

I'm car shopping now and seeing new car dealers, who would typically only keep the real cream puffs, with 10 year old cars on their lots with over 100k on them - but still asking cream puff price. So if the market's anything like here, it's probably expensive.

EDIT: I agree with Duke, and would apply that to any modern German car

I don't know about the price, so I'm no help there. But golly-gosh is that a sexy car!!

I was having the same thing, emailed the magazine about it, there was a technical issue that rooted back to something in the image I use as my avitar.  They evidently fixed it for me sometime yesterday.  I was emailing with Colin Wood about it.

Extremely whack.

Average mileage for a 2017 M240i nationwide is 37,619.  Adjusted for mileage, even in this market, that's a $25,000 car on a good day. Dealer is playing on the fact that it's a relatively rare car and he likely has the only one within reasonable driving distance.

Is that a picture of the actual car you saw? The European license plate (Great Britain?) and the steering wheel on the wrong side make me wonder if it is a grey market car or??? Or are you currently across the pond?

Pricewise it looks to be in the range of others I found by googling, but there is a wide spread. Pricing right now is nuts on everything.

Depending on the condition and the options, I could see it.

About 10 years ago, I did some analysis on what drove the price of cars. Excluding enthusiast specific cars (meaning, a Miata is not excluded but an R-package is excluded), the thing that had the most impact was the age. Mileage had a shockingly small impact. Condition had a large impact, but excellent condition is something that can be quite different for different people.

With that in mind, I wouldn't balk at all at the mileage, assuming it is in good condition and the mileage doesn't indicate some large repair/maintenance bills coming.

$31k is brand new Miata RF territory, if you like the hardtop thing and can fit inside.

When they took away dipsticks in 2006, they officially lost their way in the world. Over night the brand identity went from "ultimate driving machine" to "thats a kind of cool looking Buick...when did they start making sports cars" :) Stop with all the name changes, from flagship 3 series now a 4 series then 2... FYI BMW, your "sports car" is a 3 Series you call the M3. Its lightweight, made for drivers not boulevard cruising. It was distinctive, unlike the last iteration of Maseratti/Lexus IS350 looking thing. Come back BMW...you've lost your way!

I would look at the differences, it's really in no way a discount M2.

And that price is obscene for that mileage and year.

There are better deals out there (a couple lower mileage cars for the same money) but the price isn't totally out of line for the current market:

Not the actual car, but the dealer's photos were not so great.

Price has dropped to $29K, which I would be interested in at maybe 40,000 miles.

Apparently that dealership has never heard of detailing a car. You would think they would put in the minimum effort to wash it before they ask a premium price.

It's a black car.  They probably detailed it an hour or so before the photo.

I always say, you only own a black car once, unless you like having a perpetually dirty car.
