Said goodbye to my Moxie last night.  My (now ex) wife and I rescued her when she was 1.5 years old.  She got cancer at 8, and we managed to fight it aggressively until she finally asked for the rainbow at 16 years, 5 months.  Hard to know if the cancer won, or if she was just bloody old, but the speed of her decline over the last 6 weeks makes me think it was the cancer.

My ex was a veterinary tech with a bleeding heart.  She always brought home animals, like a cat that someone wanted to euthanize because it peed on the couch, or a dog that had leukemia.  Our house was always filled with reject animals that either peed on the couch, or needed special care.  At the time we had 4 cats and 3 dogs, and I said "NO MORE."  One night on my way home from work, the wife calls and says "there is a pit bull in the back yard, but she's nice."  By the time my wife got home, I was cuddling on the couch with the pit bull and I said "we're keeping this one."

I know everyone says that their pet was the best, but Moxie really defined "good girl."  She didn't bark, she loved everyone, she was calm and playful.  She was obedient, she didn't pull on a leash, and in fact didn't even need one.  I could have walked her in Manhattan without a leash and she would have been fine.  When someone new would come to visit my house, they would ask if Moxie was friendly, and I would tell them that she would help a burglar load the TV in their car AND offer to drive the getaway vehicle.  One day as I was locking her in my truck to go into a store, a stranger commented that no one would dare steal my truck.  I was silently thinking that they would fall in love with Moxie and forget about the truck.

She loved everyone, and hated when people were sad, so no sadness.  Raise a pint, a cocktail, a root beer, or a glass of milk for my little girl.  Celebrate Moxie with me and lift a drink.

They don't live forever, so the best you can do is give them a good life.

Looks like she had one.

Seems to be some dust in the room right now. My house is also a collection point for wayward animals, and we've gotten several amazing ones over the years, including the foundling who showed up last week.

These morons extend their condolences as well.

Sorry for your loss.

I'll see a friend tomorrow and finally meet his newest family member. He has a thing for wayward pit bulls.

Losing a dog sucks so much because dogs are better than people.

I'm very sorry to hear about this man

I disagree. It's not just a dog, it's YOUR dog. He's your friend, confidant, drinking buddy, and food vacuum. He's outlasted, wives, friends, and enemies. All he asked in response was some love, scratchies, and belly rubs. I'm glad you were there to give him some.

I'm thinking of you tonight, and while I'm sad for the situation, I'm glad you had him around.

None of them are 'just a pet". They're family.

When my mom was demented and dying, she claimed that a little black cat came to her each night and waited for her. She no longer remembered her long dead and beloved Manx cat India (or me, for that matter), but still that little black cat came to her, and waited. I choose to believe it was India at the rainbow bridge waiting for her. May you find Moxie waiting for you when it's time..

What I call a lifetime dog. If you're lucky, you might get...one.

She may be gone, but she'll also always be a part of you. I'm sorry for your loss, but also recognizing how lucky you are to have had her.
