So, I just had an interview at 1:00pm. It went well, they want to hire me, they need somebody asap (asked if I could get away with 1 weeks notice). I could go into the many reasons why my current job isn't doing it for me, but a short list:
-not enough pay
-no room for growth
-its not even boring, soul sucking work, there isn't much for me to do!
The biggest thing I am after is more money (surprise)! Honestly, I'd shovel E36 M3 all day if it paid more... so here is where I am running into my little dilemma:
-new job MAY pay me my same rate
-get to learn a very VERY important software program that is growing throughout plants all over the world. Very important database management utility
-lots of room for growth (job wise), currently unsure what the growth looks like $$$$ wise
- benefits/time off closely matches current job (instead of 8:15-4:45 mon thru fri I'd be 8-6 mon thru thur), same holiday amount, same benefits, etc
-new company is small (see "growing"), much more cozy atmosphere than current government job.
-workforce is young
ON TOP OF ALL OF THIS (sigh), I have applied for a position to go work up north permanently that makes six figures. It will not further me in my specific career, but will allow me to buy an acreage outright within 5 years (and a race car, and give me the time off to fly around and go racing, and and and). The issue is that I need to let the company I currently interviewed with know by Monday if I'll take the position. I'd prefer not to take the position, then burn then after a month or two if I did get a job offer up north.
So... WWGRMD?
You gotta do what's best for you, take the job with room for growth, and assuming SAP software training (Just a guess) and if you get 6 figures, leave later. I understand the idea of loyalty and you don't want to leave them stranded, but at the end of the day, consider yourself first, let the company's interests come second...
No room for growth? Why would you want a future there? berkeley the weeks notice. Take the job NOW. Is there a reason to worry with this new job? Is there a reason not to burn this company that is offering?
I work for a place that is looking for help in sales.
It amazes me that when people start talking about making "more" money, large commissions, or making a "large salary", the company starts to shuts down and looks elsewhere.
Why is "I'd like to make some good money" a bad thing now? (yeah, I know why.....)

Where would you be going "up north"? I'm from Whitehorse originally and would jump at the chance to go back there. On the other hand I've heard really ugly nasty things about the working environment in Ft. McMurray from university friends who did summer stints at the oil fields.

Rainbow Lake, aka middle of buttberkeley nowhere Alberta (Whitehorse would be a better place to be)! Fort McMurray is actually a lovely place if you are into small town atmospheres, no word of a lie. The residential areas on top of the valley are actually REALLY nice. Only thing that sucks about the Mac is 1) Traffic. Rage inducing traffic. All day, every day, doesn't matter what time. 2) Gratuitous amounts of d-bags... and newfies :P

I don't know either, it's like "the extra $10k per year you are going to pay me is going to BREAK your bottom line?" Like that is a company I want to work for, right? I understand having to work for my money, "earn" the increase in wage but sometimes you gotta shake your head about it.

I have the luxury of time on my hands; time to find the right job that is. I am currently moving into a month to month rental with a fellow technologist in his new townhouse. I can basically ditch with 1 months notice. Lots of projects are coming back online, companies are hiring. So I have no reason to go anywhere in a hurry. Reasons to not burn the current company? Because they are large/guberment and instrumentation is a specialized, tight knit field in Alberta? Word gets around quick about stuff. Plus I'd really like to drain my health care expense account and glasses benefits before departing
I guess it should be noted, there is no "job shortage" or "unemployment" in Alberta. I could burn bridges like nobodies business, but that doesn't seem like a sound practice.

InTools (software by intergraph) for developing/updating databases for plants in regards to their equipment/plant design. Very big deal in the oilfield industry right now. Experience like this would allow me to go consulting in 5 years on my own if I did things right
Well that was quick! Because I wouldn't quit my current job instantly and with no notice, they went with someone else. Makes me feel like I dodged a bullet, if your company can't wait two weeks for a talented individual, you might want to look at rethinking your strategy.
That would suggest to me that they wanted someone who looked like they might have had a pulse in the last two days, rather than you specifically.
I'd try to hold out for a job where they want you.
