I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately found Cruise playing Reacher to be a laughable prospect.

It's movie. (probably an awful one... but aside from being a jackass in real life the guy has done a few entertaining flicks).

How many of you could tell Stallone was a wee little man in Rambo or Rocky?

I am disappointed in the choice of Reacher. I am happy to see it on the big screen.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher is ridiculous. You don't hire an otter to play the part of a grizzly bear, no matter how talented an actor the otter is. (Apologies to any otters who may be offended by being associated with Tom Cruise.) BUT, having said all that, the author is sufficiently involved with the movie to take a bit part (as a desk sergeant IIRC), so it isn't just a case of taking the money for the film rights and washing his hands. I'm prepared to at least read some reviews of the film by people I trust before writing it off.

and thank goodness they're not trying to make one of the books into a movie ... that's something hollywood just doesn't do very well ... yes there are different bits and pieces from different books ... but like I said, thank goodness it's a stand alone

You have a short guy with muscle and put him next to fat or skinny people with no muscle and he's going to look bigger(Rambo, Rocky). You take someone who's 5'10 and put them next to someone who's a half an inch shy of 6'6 and you'll be able to tell(Rocky IV).

No amount of creative camera work could hide the fact that Lundgren was huge and Stallone wasn't, but that was the point in the first place.

Aside from that, since when was 5'10 wee? Tom Cruise is tall for a woman at 5'7 and has never had anything close to Stallone size. I seriously doubt he could pull it off. Hell, there's a thought, You want a big guy who does Stoic very well? Why not Dolph?

I have never heard of this before now. I saw the ad for the movie, but when I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on, I kept changing channels. Having Cruise in it doesn't help.

For car people, you do know that Cruise does all of his own driving stunts, yes? Some previewes I've seen showed the behind pictures of the car with tons of cameras on it, and him driving some pretty interesting scenes.

We worship Steve McQueen for doing so much driving, but hate Tom for doing the same thing?

I'm no fan of Cruise, but for an ACTOR who drove a Red Bull F1 car, he's not a bad car guy. Just sayn.

He did a few years of SCCA racing after he met Paul Neuman while filming 'The Color of Money'. I also believe that he is a pilot and owns a P-51.

A movie doesn’t have to follow the book to be good (or bad). Everyone seems to love the Bourne movies, but their relationship to the book becomes more and more tenuous as they progress. Great movies all the same. Having never heard of Reacher before I’ll probably hit it up over the holiday.

In reply to Adrian_Thompson:

the problem i have with cruise playing reacher, and i've read all of them so i'm very familiar with the character, is that his physicality is almost a character by itself in the novels. he's an observer who cant disappear due to his sheer size first (definitely not cruise) but with the ability and willingness to quickly dispense violence if necessary (cruise can pull that off well), so i'm reluctantly hopeful they didnt butcher the character so badly i can't enjoy it.

I read one of these novels once, and I am glad they cast tom Cruise, however I think it would have been better to cast nicholas cage, since he is an even scrawnier man and an even worse actor. The novels deserve to be destroyed on the screen. Or just destroyed period. The one I read (can't remember which) was berkeleying terrible. I felt like I was reading what an angry 14 year old football/wrestler/rambo wannabe writes for his english class, using wikipedia to insert random technical jargon for weapons and such.

Its so coarse its not even suitable for ass wiping.

Who, in this thread, is hating Tom Cruise for his driving? Nobody has mentioned that at all. Weird though the guy is personally, I don't hate Cruise in the right role. Jack Reacher is just completely the wrong role.

Reacher is a tough guy who has had it hard since childhood. He's huge. He's nowhere near stupid, but he's survived as much by sheer physical size, speed, and power as anything else. He is not cool or slick. He shows that history in scars. Jack Reacher is everything Tom Cruise is not.

Cruise could have pulled off Bourne. But as somebody says above, Reacher's physical presence is almost a character in itself, and unless every other character is a Little Person, there's just no way this is going to work and be even remotely the same character as in the books.

It may work in its own right... but not as a book adaptation.

They're not literature. They're not thought-provoking or memorable. They're good page-turners. The main character is tough, competent, and most importantly doesn't whine incessantly . He takes a pounding and gets E36 M3 done.

Lee Childs gets the details wrong, but not nearly to the laughable extent that, say Patrica Cornwell (whose entire series is built around a character that is supposed to notice details) does. I come across as much more of a fanboy than I am. I'm just amazed that they cast this so completely wrongly. I mean, really - the books are effectively paperback screenplays. How hard could it have been?

They can do some amazing things with special effects and camera angles.

damn... so much hate for something that's nothing more than entertaining ... this isn't Tolstoy for heavens sake ... if you don't like the books, don't read anymore of them ...

this thread was about the mis-casting that is so often a hollywood thing, not whether the author is on par with Dickens

Since i think you've stumbled onto a FAR more entertaining topic....

I think Nicholas Cage would absolutely RUIN Tom Cruise in a fight. He's a MUCH larger man and actually has some muscle on him.

I like this game much better. Actor vs. actor deathmatches!

Cruise earned the disdain he gets from his non-fans. During his SCCA racing days, his competitors not-so-jokingly referred to the club moniker as SeeCruiseCrashAgain.

He was squirrerly then and hasn't done much to beat the rap since then. He may be a pilot but that doesn't mean I'd want to sit to his right anytime soon.
