One of the Gran Turismo ads (3 I think), had a car stopping on course so the driver could get out and use a skid-o-can.

I remember that one.

I'm really excited for the release of F4. I want to build up my garage of cars again, join a few clubs from different forums, and just have a good time racing anything from spec crapboxes to full-blown exotica.
I really hope the GT folks come back with something a bit more...finished than GT5. I'd like to see this rivalry keep going, as it can only mean good things for the console driver sim crowd!
LOL, I have GT5 and a PS3, and have to admit I've never played Forza, but I am not a fanboy. GT5 has been fairly underwhelming for me. In fact I think I'd rather have Forza if nothing else just to be able to modify the cars with engine swaps and custom liveries, but I'm not buying another system. My comments have nothing to do with Forza as a game, but I do have an admitted bias against Clarkson.

I don't know why they don't do that. In theory, they've got all the "virtual" engines already built.
Of course, it'd take about a week for everything to just have LS engines in it. Oh snap, a great idea for a spec class: Anything you want, with an LS in it!

FM4 is that good. Well, at least a huge improvement over FM3, and on par with the best PC-based sims in terms of physics at the edge of traction. The car club implementation also looks killer, although we won't know a whole lot more until the game launches and people can start to join. Look for a small snippet in the December GRM and an online review and league information when the game launches on the 11th.
Also, consider yourselves invited to join Team GRM (tgrm) online when the FM4 goes live. It's already in place, just need some members now.

Probably because a bunch of car manufacturers wouldn't give them rights to use their cars if you were allowed to put another manufacturer's engines in them.
Like you said, it wouldn't be long before everything had an LS in it. Maybe Mazda, Toyota, and some of the small manufacturers wouldn't get too ticked. But I can see Ford, Nissan, BMW, and Porsche refusing to let you see what their cars would be like with another manufacturer's engine. Heck, Chevy too.
Doesn't mean I don't really want to see what it would be like.

D'oh. I didn't want to hear that. That's the most central question on my mind in any of this stuff...
I haven't driven any of the Forza series... Do you have an impression of the physics as compared/contrasted with GT5?

This. Although LS powered chevies is one thing, but there are plenty of options. Rotary powered Miatas, 1uz powered AE86s, v8 Escorts, v10 powered M3s, RB powered Silvias,911 powered 914s.
Course, I can't remember which ones you could do in Forza 3, so I'm not sure. Addendum: I do remember having a 996 powered 914, and it was tits.
And sometimes, the engine swap is a waste of money, the Jellybean GTO is better with the stock engine and some twin turbos than with the nascar engine and whatever other crap you could put in it.
In reply to ransom:
Scott Lear would be a better judge there. I've only played with GT5 a bit since I preferred FM3 in every way other than pretty images...so you can guess how I feel about a greatly improved FM4 in terms of physics.
Note: 100% GT fan here. I worked for KB Toys when the PS2/GT3 dropped and own a PS2 with GT4 that's like 75% complete on a controller. I've played GT5 on the PS3 extensively. I completed GT3 A-Spec 100%. I loved GT.
I just recently got an XBOX360 and have only dabbled FM3 a little. It is vastly superior to GT4 in every way, and nearly superior to GT5 as it is. From what I have seen so far of FM4 (of which I have the LCE pre-ordered), it will blow GT5 out of the water.
The PS3/GT5 buildup was such a let-down, and FM3 is so good that it caused this died-in-the-wool fan to switch, no questions.
Javelin, I was the same way about GT until I played the Forza series.
I distinctly remember being 13, when my friend who lived next door got his Playstation and Gran Turismo for Christmas. I think I basically lived over there for the rest of the school break, and by the time I got back to school I knew I needed to have a system and GT copy of my own. I think it was nearly time for summer vacation when I'd saved enough working with my dad and earning some money doing odd jobs around the neighborhood.
In fact, like most of the younger folks here, I credit these games with my love of cars today. No one in my family was really a gearhead, so GT also exposed me to cars I never even knew existed. If not for GT, I might still believe that Ford Mustangs are the best cars in the world, and refuse to acknowledge otherwise.
I don't think the commercial is really trying to convince people that playing a game is better than real track time, but let's face it, it's way more accessible. If actual track time can be compared to crack than games like these should be considered racing methadone. It's not really a cure, but it makes the cravings a heckuva a lot easier to deal with.
definitely buying a 360 and f4 asap. Want to get a decent wheel/pedal set as well. with a third pedal and shifter would be spectacular. the one tested on hooniverse looks awesome.
I just like the security and population of LIVE a lot better as well, and the fact that the playstation franchise seems to be dying slowly while Microsoft continues taking over.
And I've ALWAYS been a ps, pc, and nintendo person. always. Always GT and Final Fantasy.
After playing FM4 at the $2011 Challenge this past Friday, I just had to order the same wheel and pedals that they had. It says 2-5 days shipping, so I'm hoping to have it by Friday.
