these days it just seems so impersonal.. fill out an online application. no person to person contact.. try to call and follow up and you get alot of run around... technology is great, but sometimes i just wonder.

Have to agree, I haven't had much luck with getting anything out of online applications.
I think the problem is that it makes it so easy for so many applicants that they get swamped and its a crapshoot to have it looked at at all.
I only got one job from a recruiter, my first out-of-college job.
Subsequent jobs have come through word of mouth and my reputation in the industry.
As an aside, I interviewed four people today, and for the most part they sucked. I had a good time trolling one guy, but other than that, where are the qualified applicants?

Maybe try applying in person instead next time.
The app process I'm going through right now is pretty bizarre and old school.
I emailed a BMW specialty and performance shop asking about openings, with my resume attached. I got a reply a few days later stating there is an opening and asking for me to call. I played phone tag with the guy for a week or so and just got back today from an interview with him.
Very nice guy, has two mechanics in the shop right now, he's ready to retire so I guess I'll be replacing the guy that's going to take over the company when he retires. It's honestly a dream job for me at this point in my life.
Now I've scheduled to come in on my day off and work for a day (paid of course) to show that I'm going to work out.
Honestly it's a breath of fresh air after all the chain online apps and impersonal generic paper apps I've gone through lately.
If it's not a small business, there's just so many people looking for work (sweeping generalization, I know) that they don't really care. The applications are pretty much just a stockpile of serfdom, If someone leaves, just pick up the next one and call them in.
