Got a Galaxy S3 just before I headed out to SEMA. I likes it. Now I need some super awesome and mega cool apps. Found a couple of games, but I want stuff like a working mechanical clock for the background, maybe some automotive gauges or something like that.

Who's got an android and what are the best apps out there and what do I absolutely HAVE to have?

F1 Live Stream is great for live timing & scoring (free), but you'll need LiveSports24F1 (free) or similar for news.

GForce (free and paid) is made by a major national-level autocrosser and does acceleration, velocity, and other stuff with internal sensors (no GPS).

Google Maps (free) and Navigation (free) are what you want for turn-by-turn. Disable the VZ Navigator and all that other crap.

  • Dolphin Browser to replace the crap one that comes with it
  • GO Launcher EX with the Calendar, Switch & Weather widgets for above average coolness and adjustability
  • Google Gesture search for looking up contacts super easily
  • Tether for non-root USB access for your laptop
  • Level for aligning your car with the phone :)

QR Droid...has been very usefull in pricechecking items

SmartActions is pretty cool for a variety of things (changes profiles for work, home, car, bluetooth etc)

What about live wallpapers? I have the galaxy one with the spinning galaxy...

Any others that ya'll recommend? I'd LOVE to find an animated tourbillon watch or gear/mechanical watch one, but can't find one that works.

"Scanner Radio" will give you police and fire scanner for many municipalities around the world.
My small town was on there and I lived on a major road so I would flip it on when all the sirens went by.

I am years outdated with my apps, I found a few I liked and stuck with them and havent updated in a while. I dont play games much or use gadgets or widgets. 90% of my phone use is just surfing the internet.

I like the free version of Air Control (its a game)

If you play Forza Motorsport there are a few tuning calculators. The FM3 one is free, the one for FM4 is $2 or something. Both are pretty similar though. Usually gets you a pretty good starting point for a tune then you can fine tune from there to your preferences. The FM4 calculator lets you set your preference for "stability" (oversteer/understeer) and adjusts the setup accordingly.

I have no live wallpapers. I think they use up a lot of battery.

Neon Clock GL Live wallpaper is my favorite. Its blue neon on my Droid RAZR Maxx and red on my Transformer Prime.

I turned the stupid "trails" off though. You can move all the "gauges" around and select different ones. And change the color to whatever you want. I like customization

Bob Stretch showed me a corner weight scale app on his Android. You type in the numbers on the scale, the weight and air pressures and it will determine what changes to cross weights need to be made!

also, get trackmaster

craigs notifica or whatever they call it these days... best craigs search tool around... click the link for direct access... not even sure if you can find it with the search these days... sometimes you can't find em... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mufumbo.craigslist.notification.android

Gmail... or whatever email you use... most all online have an app... if you have a pop3 you can just use the default email app on the phone

next... save your local maps so you can use the maps with no wifi or data signal... just click the menu button and hit the "make avl offline" portion.... if I was traveling I'd save every bit of the road I'd be near... granted i'm on ATT and my connection is spotty in so many areas... but when I move to verizon in jan/feb i'll do the same... just in case.

Pandora is a great app if you like tunes... run it on my computers, phone, and on my TV (roku)...

Google play is another nice one for music... if you've got your own music on the computer it lets you put the music in a "cloud" and you can stream it to your phone.

Dolphin Browser HD as mentioned above is a great browser, has tabs and works well... but if you are concerned with data limits you might also try out Opera... it has a filter so it doesn't pull in as much data for pics (I used opera on my PC back in the 90's and early 2ks for the similar feature while on dial up)

Gauge battery widget... I tried a few out and I liked this one... puts an actual number on the top bar for the battery %... also lets you see what is using the most power (phone prob has something similar built in but I just like this one)

GOOGLE VOICE... it has a TON of features even outside of the phone... but the big perks are that it'll do your voicemail stuff... it'll transcribe the voicemail and email it to you, txt it to you and and you can also read/play it from the app on the phone... this is awesome for when you can't grab the phone and check VM but you can get a quick glance at the msg... it's not perfect at transcription but you usually get the jest of the msg

fuelLog keeps track of your MPG and other stuff... there are other options but this one worked nicely.

GTasks... ties into gmail... lets you put notes to yourself and they'll show up in your gmail account on the computer...

GasBuddy finds the cheap gas in the area... uses maps

ScanLife scan a bar code and itll bring it up... tell you where you can get the product cheaper online or local... don't use it much but it's a nice little tool

millions of other stuff... but i'll let it go at that lol

This. Battery and CPU cycles. They look pretty, but don't add any functionality.

Speaking of battery, Juice Defender can help with battery life, depending on how aggressively you let it police you.

If you're a sports fan, there are a TON of great sports apps from ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, the major sports leagues themselves, etc.

Skype for free video conferencing.

Weather Channel and Just Radar for weather.

The aforementioned barcode scanner and Craigslist apps are musts, I also like the Amazon app for quickly looking things up, reading reviews, etc.

Shazam or Soundhound are good for those "What song is that" moments. It listens to the song and tells you. Kinda fun.

For news, pick your major newspaper, cable channel, or local TV stations of choice, they all have apps.

I like "acar" for tracking vehicle maintenance and costs, I played with several of these apps and decided on this one.

Torque is good for reading codes and displaying gauges with a bluetooth OBD2 adapter ($20 from Amazon).

I'm getting hooked on using Waze on my commute. It uses reports from your fellow users to alert you to traffic jams, cops, and other things out on the road.

All good suggestions above. I haven't tried Dolphin Browser, but I use Google Chrome as my browser and it's been snappy, clean, and fast. I haven't found a reason to try anything else. If you browse reddit I would try out reddit is fun.

ah yes Chrome is prob a good choice... don't think I can run it on mine... like someone else said I've had most of my apps from when I first got the phone almost 2 years ago... and my hardware is a bit old so not all the newest stuff works with it

I like Speedview, many because my speedo is broke and it keeps me in line with the man, also does 1/4 mile and 0-60 times and has a export feature for track mapping, and also my fuel gauge is inop so I use it to log miles between gas stops.

Google Sky Map is fun
ElectroDroid is a handy electronics reference
I like Firefox over the other browsers I've tried (though it has crashed a few times)
If you run or cycle, Strava is awesome

I've bounced between Chrome, Firefox, and Dolphin on my tablet (rarely use the browser on my phone). Chrome has nice integration with the desktop version and it "looks" the best. Firefox doesn't render pages as well. I'm a long-time and still current user of the Windows version of Firefox, but the Android version leaves me cold. Dolphin's handling of bookmarks is fast and intuitive, I like it a lot. So, probably either Dolphin or Chrome, depending on personal preference.

TeslaLED makes use of camera flash for a flashlight

iSyncr, if you have iTunes (the Devil) music that you'd like to listen to.

Zedge, for getting ringtones, wallpapers, etc.

Tune-In Radio, for getting a lot of broadcast radio stations

The Whip, for keeping the slaves in line
