Honestly, I think the only reason I've never done something like that is that I've never seen another "sports car guy" suffer a hit & run like that. When it's just "civiliians" piling their appliances into each other, I just curse at the traffic jam, and ignore the wrecks on the shoulder of the road.
I hope that if I saw one of you guys get hit, I'd do the same thing as the WRX driver..
Same here.....the closest I've ever been was when MSCC was driving south a couple years ago after our mini-prix at Gainesville. I picked up some road debris [+] and had to pull over to the side of the road. As I did, my first thought was, "I'm never going to be able to catch up with those guys", and my second was, "Whoa, narrow shoulder....I'm still kind of in the road."
By the time I was fully stopped and out of the car, our club members cars had surrounded me so that I could safely lay underneath my own car and pull the debris out. They're good people. 
Such a horrible fate for such a great car. However stories of 944's legendary toughness abound on Rennlist. I remember one guy hit a patch of black ice up in the mountains, slid off the edge of the road and fell down like 20 feet. Guy walked away. These cars really give it all for their owners.

That is really awesome that those people chased him down. And glad you are ok. 944 is definitly a tough car, there is a totaled one in my garage now, from another driver sideswiping it on the interstate (not mine).

Really?!?!? Is nobody allowed to have an opinion anymore without somebody being offended? All I did was question what 2 years was spent on. It's not like I went into troll mode and started calling somebody's mom a whore or saying it was Obama's fault.

well it might have been obama's fault, but he'll probably make a speech about how assigning blame is not allowed, and then form a congressional panel to assign blame to BP for potentially causing the global extinction of 944's
The dude spent two years working on his car, it got totaled by a drunk driver, and that was what you had to say? I seriously doubt you would have said that to him if you saw him and the car in person. I don't say anything I wouldn't say in person. So would I call you a jerk if you said that in person, yeah....and you would be. Your trash talking on the web is only adding to it.

The first six months was a clutch replacement. The clutch is at the engine, but you have to start disassembly so far aft that you have to build an extension on your garage to get far back enough. The other 18 months were spent in trying to remove the German Undercoating of Doom. This almost always results in failure (*) which is why there is still some visible in the wheel well.
(*) - I once worked for someone with a very clean 928S. One winter, he carefully removed the undercoating with a rag and kerosene. Presumably many rags and barrels of kerosene. He really did not want to damage the paint.
I am not sure if that is dedication or a serious case of OCD
