Sorry, don't have any 5.3's kicking around. I hear they do fit well in a Miata though.

I should be unloading the van from the Chryslers @ Carlisle show. Was thinking about putting some side pipes on the van just for kicks. Wasn't going to plumb them in, but don't want to get beat-up for being a poser.

By far one of the best forums I visit. I drive a Kia that is a little bit "tuner"; rims, lowering springs, strut bar, etc. There are a few tuner forums I lurk just to check for wheels and whatnot, but dare not post, because as soon as I do all the "OMG KIA IS SO GHEY" posts start flying. You guys drive your paint-by-number Civics and 240s, I'll keep my Rio.

Cause calling them on their bullE36 M3 and insulting everyones genetics while implying sexual relations with their entire family is a good start.

Ordinarily, I would agree with you, but having been on the administrator side of the fence more than once, I'm going to disagree pretty firmly here.

You should politely direct people to search, but if you establish a forum culture of answering the same idiotic questions over and over and over, what you wind up with is a handful of intelligent, helpful posters who work themselves to death spoonfeeding an ever-growing army of idiot members who don't ever learn to do anything for themselves. That ends up being a spectacularly bad use of good volunteers.

You don't need to flame everyone's first post, but you do need to put a polite but firm foot on it. Particularly when you see a new thread ON THE SAME INDEX PAGE as an existing thread on the same topic.

There are 3 forums I visit with any regularity:

GRM retro-rides

and occasionally noskooljustcool

Retro-Rides and noskool are both european (based in England I believe), but frequently have cool projects in the build sections, and just....kind of like the GRM boards of Europe it seems. Friendly people, open to pretty much any car you want to talk about. Well...okay, some people at RR might give a little grief over a car that isn't 15+ years old, but that's about it.

The reason we can't use the "use the search funcion!" response here is because our search function doesn't...uh...function very well (IMO)

On the other hand, we all keep coming back and helping one another out.

Kind of a blessing in disquise, I suppose.

I have to agree with you on that - I'm a user (not administrator) on a German expat/travel forum and while I like helping people, asking the same question as the other four people on the same page in the same subforum gets rather old.

Or my other favourite, asking the same question that has been answered with "no, you can't do that because " at least ten times already in the same thread, because you are clearly "special" and then get upset when the natives get a little annoyed and start calling them names...

I'm on a few other automotive forums. This is the only one that really feels like home. It's a true melting pot of automotive interests.

My thoughts on a few of the others:

NASIOC: I LOVE the OT section. It's made up of disgruntled former Subaru owners like me, and can get hilarious when the occasional noob wanders in there. Every other section should be locked due to the fact that every possible question someone has on a Subaru has probably been answered at least 658 times already. Most answers are right at the top in the stickies in each subforum. And for some reason, the OT gets major breaking news before the news gets the news. There seems to be someone from the OT at every corner of the globe.

Trans Am Country: Lots of good info, but lots of older, closed-minded people that think the 2nd Gen Trans Am is the best car ever made. I've owned mine for 10 years now, and trust me, it's not the best car ever made. And if you don't buy 'Merican... oh boy... I caught hell for having a WRX on there. I haven't told them I bought a Mazda yet.

78TA.com: Same as above, but with more people and a little more tolerance for the other "best car ever": the 2nd Gen Camaro.

Turbo-Mopar.com: Awesome site with some truly knowledgeable people. Some are on here as well. Just about everyone is a Mopar guy or an automotive nerd, or both. There's a lot of interesting stuff on there.

This forum rules because it's so diverse that if I have an automotive question about any make or model car, I'm sure to find the answer faster than Googling some other forum and searching there. There's an expert on just about anything imaginable on here.

+1 on this forum rocking compared to others. This is pretty much the only forum I go to for car stuff or anything really, except a couple others that are focused on other things not even remotely car related.

I dunno, this group can be as collectively closed minded and cliquey as any other forum. Just start talking NASCAR and see what I mean. Or get on the subject of new/newer cars. If we're discussing cheap, old, and obscure, we're golden. ;)

I'm on the HAMB, TCL (since '99) and a few others, including moderating on a couple automotive forums, and this one, while fun and filled with obscure sports car knowledge, is still an aquired taste.

Thanks. That's a nice succinct explanation of why I prefer the forum to the magazine.

I have a HAMB account, but seldom use it. There are some very talented people there, but I think they're not very supportive of people who don't want to follow their One True Way (tm) of how to build a car. We're a lot more TIMTOWTDI around here.

The only issue I find is that, for example, I can discuss my '61 Renault 4CV here and people would be cool with it, but my '06 Mustang and '11 MINI are too new, too modern-modified to be discussed, in general.

One of the things I like about TCL is the new car industry discussions, with a few insiders chiming in. While I may not afford all the new cars now, they WILL become used cars and I like finding out about cars that may find their way to cheapville in the future, as well as cars I MIGHT afford (like the MINI) and drive now. Yeah, there are trolls there, but there's a lot of cool well rounded information there, from industry insiders, to threads on Cars 'n Coffee in various parts of the country, to world car news, to tech stuff.

Just tell us that you'll be making a skid plate out of a speed limit sign for the mini, and we'll be happy to tell you how awesome the mini project is.

Really? I like both of those cars as well as the 4CV. Just because I can't afford the latter 2 of the 3 doesn't mean I don't like them.

Now go over to vwvortex and tell them you have a Mustang and see some panties get in a wad real quick. They mail you German car horseblinders when you sign up over there.

rx7club.com had the most bipolar population ever, from absolutely brilliant guys easily the equal of the bright guys over here and then there were the mouth breathers. Very little in between. The mods were somewhat schizophrenic also, you never knew what would set them off. The signal/noise ratio got to where it wasn't worth the bullE36 M3.

Actually the Vortex (and TCL in particular) is real friendly to Mustangs, with a couple Mustang threads and my own car is well received there. A lot of the regulars OWN Mustangs, including a few new 5.0 and BOSS 302 owners.

Agreed. I was there quite a bit with my V8 RX7 and got banned once just for having built it, then got a complete section set up devoted to V8 RX7s, which was cool. Still had the mouthbreathers enter that section and badmouth the conversions, with all sorts of misinformend BS and ranting about soul.
