Hell yeah!!!
Freak New England snow storm. 13 inches of wet, heavy snow and leaves still on tress add up to widespread damage. There's still 250,000 customers here in CT without power (down from 800K).
Yeah, my bro up in Joisey was without power for days. Tough when you're on a well. That snow blew up a lot of trees.
We got luck, we only lost power for two days. I was a little confused by them being three days apart though. We lost it Sat night, then wednesday night
We have power after six days too, here in Morris County, NJ. We now have heat. And the well works. And we can stop feeding the generator (which we brought to my in-laws....they're in their 80s). We had crews from Ohio and Delmarva working in front of our houses. We tried to get a motel room but the visiting crews had taken them all.
This box truck crawled under this "mouse trap" tree (below) the first day (getting out a lot to look if he'd made it). He cleared it by 6 inches. The next day he drove under it at about 40 mph.
Another shot (below) of the mouse trap taken from my front yard. It sat like this for 6 days with only a few orange cones to warn folks. A tractor trailer couldn't make it under and he had to back up do a SLOOOOOW K-turn....poor guy.
(Below)We have an old kerosene heater at our summer house that hasn't been used in years. So I brought it over and fired it up in the driveway for few hours (it made smoke and a foul smell for a while, but then it was fine). We didn't want to put it in the house, but figured it was OK to use in the garage. So we hung out in our "heated" garage with flashlights and the Kero heater. Here's Lin being productive and doing some homework. I sat around and read car magazines. :-D

I still lost power after getting the generator. However, after I spent as much on having a transfer switch wired in.....No losses.

What part of Morris County do you live in? I have relatives in Morrisville,NJ that were out of power only about 3 days. I guess location matters.....

Same down here...a few summers back three hurricanes crisscrossed through our county, and we lost power for a long spell. My folks got a generator for their house, and it has been years since we've had a big one.

I don't think there is actually a Morrisville in NJ (but there's one in PA near Trenton). I'm guessing you mean Morristown, which is about 6 miles from us.
One of the gals who works with me lives near me in my town. She also lost power for the same amount of time as me., But another woman who lives between us only lost power for a few hours. Yep, location matters!
Several years back we lost power for 6 days during an ice storm so I feel your pain. The kicker is I showed a guy with the repair crew where the outage was on the first day. I figure we would have power when I got from work. HA! Double kicker is half the houses in the neighborhood never lost power and would turn on their Christmas lights while we froze. The only thing that made it tolerable in the least was we have natural gas heat, so we could always take a hot shower.
I have a similar condition here. Been that way for 40 yrs. Mention to the crews and the power company. No change.
We actually had a dead oak tree hanging over the wires that I called CL&P about 2 years ago. They said that they no longer proactively cut any trees/branches, but rather wanted the homeowner to take responsibility. I did, and had someone out to cut the tree down (along with several dead limbs on the tree next to it). Had I not done that, it definitely would have come down during Irene. Now CL&P is claiming it's the municipalities that weren't keeping up with the dead limbs!
This time around, we had several large limbs come down on the street near the wires, it was a real mess. I had everything cleaned up in our yard and then we lost another 20' long limb with a bunch of branches yesterday. There are still many limbs overhanging the road that are hanging on by a thread. Hopefully CL&P or the town will take these down before someone gets really hurt. Otherwise, the next time we have rain/wind/snow, these will all come down.
We drove under/around fallen trees/limbs/etc. for the past week, only yesterday was everything cleared. I personally cleared a tree that was across our road last Sunday, and pulled the limb that fell yesterday out of the road. I can't expect the town to do everything for me, after all.
CL&P was saving $$$ by not having their crews maintain the trees near the wires. The gamble worked for a few years, but it really backfired on them this year. However, since they're the only game in town, I have to question what will change. The people who lose in all of this are their many customers who have now had two extended outages this year.
And who wins? Retail stores, along with anyone selling a generator or gasoline!
We were out for 5 days, power came back on Thursday afternoon. Have a generator, but no transfer switch. That's on the list of things to be done real soon.
We did a 5 day outage 6 years ago, bought a diesel genset, and under the laws of perverse nature, haven't had a outage longer than a couple hours since.

I lost power for about 3 hours. The people 4 houses away lost power for about 3 days.
On a tangential note, we were in a Holiday Inn Express in north/central NJ on Friday night, and about half the vehicles in the parking lot were boom trucks.
In reply to aeronca65t:

"I'm not really a lineman but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express."

That was the exact same problem we had and the reason a lot of people lost power. Duke had not cleared the rights-of-way for years. A short while after the ice storm, they started clearing all of them due to all the bad press.
This is day ten and my neighbor still doesn't have power. They have(had) a pole between the street and their house that serviced only their home. Their pole and wires are still on the ground. Lucky for them they have a generator.
