He apparently knew when to fold em'.
SWMBO made me drag her to one of his xmas shows about 8-years ago. I was not looking forward to it.
He walks out on stage, looks down at a middle-aged guy in the front row & says "You don't want to be here, do you?" The guy reluctantly admitted it & Kenny says "I'll make you a deal, for each song you recognize I'll give you $20." By the end of the night the guy had almost $200 & Kenny made him put on one of his tshirts.
I was a little envious that we weren't sitting in the front row...
I convinced he's stoned on this video.
My dad loved Kenny's music and for some reason the Gambler lyrics pop into my head a lot. .....you gotta know when to hold em...
If the only thing he ever did was give us Kenny Rogers Roasters and the best Seinfeld episode ever, he'd be a National Treasure.
...but he did so much more.
Kenny Rogers was on one of the first infomercials I ever remember seeing. He introduced himself and was selling guitar lesson books and tapes. I had never heard of him before, but not long after that, The Gambler was released and my father listened to it all the time, since he had just gotten his first car with a tape player in it. I never even knew about First Edition until I saw The Big Lebowski.
I guess I liked Kenny Rogers.
Rogers starred as Brewster Baker in the racing film “Six Pack”.......
Now I need to find it.......
RIP

When I was a kid I thought he was Canadian because of that show
How so? I really don't remember many specifics about it, other than one of the band members singing "Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, Think I'm gonna eat some worms". Was it a Canadian made show, or he sounded Canadain, or what?

Now we're talking. Psychedelic Kenny Rodgers. Who knew?
In reply to Scotty Con Queso :
There's a Seinfeld horror game out now that features the glow from the Roasters neon sign.

Good God, I saw that in the movie theater as a kid. Haven't seen it since. Thanks for making me feel really really old now.
I was a fan when I was a wee lad back in the 70s, and I remain one to this day. RIP, and thanks for everything, Gambler.
