...is one difficult corporation. Why does a gym need salespeople? Why does it need flexible costs?

Compared to our local YMCA, the local LA Fitness is roughly half the cost, but hopefully the hassle is worth, because at the outset it seems like this operation will be a major PITA. The wife wants to attend to LA Fitness because the pool is virtually empty on most nights, unlike the YMCA which is usually packed.

Anyone a LA Fitness member?

All gyms employ salespeople. Gold's Gym has some pretty brutal member recruitment quotas, hence why they are so damn pushy.

My wife used Gold's for a while. When I told them I wasn't interested, they didn't seem pushy. Maybe because they were smart enough to move on our maybe because I'm an shiny happy person. I dunno.

If you can do without the pool, try Planet Fitness. I'm a member, it's $10/month. I've been there 3 months now (7 years at YMCA before this) and have had zero hassles so far. I like it. I wish they had more free weight equipment, but otherwise I'm happy.

I refuse to go anywhere named after Los Angeles.

I didn't find my LA fitness to be too bad. They are no different than golds or 24 hour fitness or any of those IMHO. At least they don't have contracts.

I chose LA just because it's within walking distance to the house. We will how it works out long term.

Pool is a requirement. I don't GYM during warm months because my gym membership is a $2500 MTB.

I've been a member for a few years. I've never had a bad experience with them, aside from going on busy days when the machines are in use. All the classes they have there are no additional cost. Plus the membership works at any location.

I like our local Y.  Pay as you go.  No pushy salespeople.  Good facility.

I swear, these canoe people seem to be getting pretty strange.
