Latest BMX--going old school

Here's the latest acquisition, a 1979 Team Mongoose. It's pretty much a time capsule piece.

Is it just me or does that have 48's? (Was a kid sorta into bmx way back then)

No, no 48s--just normal 36-spoke wheels.

I've temporarily given up finding the right old BMX bike. I'm scared that if I do get around to it again they'll be like guitars or potato chips in terms of the "betcha can't have just one" phenomenon...

Nice score! They had some of the best ads in the magazines, made you want one.

DoD server is giving me the red X middle finger, but knowing your appreciation and knowledge I'm sure it's sweet.

That's awesome! Had a '78 Motomag frame, but sold it off before I had a chance to build it.

The "period correct" wagon in the photo is a nice touch.

I've managed to avoid that by never selling my old ones - my original bike from 1982 or my more recent one (that actually fits so I can ride it) from 1999.

Watch yourself with that. That's hitting a collectors market, too. Unless, of course, you have any Stumpjumpers, Red Rockers or Topangas that are always in your way. . . I'll gladly take those off your hands for free

Yeah... I'm sure collectors wll be beating down my door for a '92 Cannondale Delta-V 900 with almost no original parts that I beat on for 5 years.

I had a NIB set of DX thumb shifters, but I can't remember if I sold them during a spat of eBay'ing a number of years ago. I'm hoping to sort out my collection of bike parts as I reorganize my basement.

Someday, I'll have to post a picture of my sister's 1983ish Supergoose. A few summers ago, we took it down from the rafters of my dad's shed where it hung for years. I cleaned it up, pumped up the tires, and it still rode great. Awesome bikes!

Hers was like this, but she swapped the pads out for checkered flag themed ones. I later swapped them out for updated early 90's Mongoose ones when I rode it, I kept all the old stuff.

Thanks. I wanted to shoot a photo as soon as I got it back together, and the light was decent in the driveway. I put about 15 seconds into it, but it all kinda came together.

I'm betting I still have it somewhere. I have a ton of old BMX mags, stickers, catalogs, etc., etc.

Now that I have a 1 year old nephew and a son of my own coming in 2 months, I've been interested in old toys/bikes that I had in the 80's. I'm also trying to find a Team Murray that my brother had that was blue with yellow mag wheels. It was handed down to me when he got a 10 speed. Were Team Murray's more of a cheap box store bike?

Yep. I had a Murray X24 which I was completely enamored of. But it totally came from the local department store. I probably would've been better off on a 20" at the time... But I think it was at least a half-step up from the Huffy I was riding before that

Not my specific bike, but this was the same one. It was that V crossbar that did it for me...

This is what I had, except solid mag wheels. Just a cheap store bike, but oh man the memories. And look at that cool USA sticker! I am going to search for one. I think I found a new hobby. By the way, do kids still ride bikes? :

Hate to say it, but Murray and Huffy weren't exactly top-shelf brands. On the plus side, that means that demand is now really low. On the other hand, did anyone hold onto them? Really, though, any old-school BMX bike is cool. I still have the MCS that I got when I was 12; it's hanging up in the attic.

And just thinking, there's still a few more bikes I'd like to find. I'd love an early Toker. I never had a GT back in the day. If I were hunting for one now, it would have to be one with the earlier graphics--before the cut off the end of the top tube at an angle. I want to say they started angling the top tube cut-off around 1984 or '85.

I still need a Predator Freeform Z- 85-87 or so, in pink, white bars, flight pegs, white tires, yo rock n rolla seat, that whole thing. I also need a pink Mike Dominguez. But that's a whole other animal.

Somewhere I have some NOS Predator frame stickers. The shop I worked for bought out a Schwinn dealer, and somehow I wound up with all of the stickers. At the time, no one wanted them.

I had a pink Diamong Back Dominguez too. I have frame now that was repainted at some point, I think it was originally blue.
