Don't do I!!!! I did it and I have spent the last 4 hours trying to now figure out why it is running really slow and freezing up. For the record it was running fine pre the update.

It might be just you and not have anything to do with that update in particular, I don't see any reports of recent Windows updates causing these problems.
Computer is un usable now. Really annoyed as I have to get work done and this is my work computer. The funny thing is my other computers running win 7 have not updated.
I figured it out. The most recent update to the ".NET" stuff was the issue. I did a system restore back to before the update and then disabled those updates so it will not do them in the future and the system is back working better than ever. The only thing is now there are a bunch of security updates that it is wanting to do now and I don't want to mess up my system. A real catch 22 as I don't want to screw up a good running computer but on the other hand I don't want security issues. I am suspicious that the security stuff may be part of the windows 10 stuff that I am also avoiding.
Here are some Win10-related updates that will do nothing good for your computer, you can block these (or remove them if you already have them):
http://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/28/microsoft-intensifies-data-collection-on-windows-7-and-8-systems/
Once those are blocked, I'd say you should create a restore point and install the other security updates. If those are successful, I'd even suggest creating another restore point and trying to install the one that messed up your system a second time.
I use 7 at work. I just bought a new box for my home use. It's: Win 7 64 Pro, 3.6GHz Xeon quad core, NVIDIA graphics card, 32GB, 1TB. With 8GB it was seven bills delivered from TD. Bought the extra 24GB on Amazon. No, I don't want the "free" Win 10 "upgrade." Had to uninstall some stoopid flag icon update that just appeared in the system tray.
It's pretty snappy. I would say it is about as snappy as the box it replaced was when I bought it about 10 years ago running 10 year ago software.
I swear I'm the only person on Earth to never have any major problems with any version of Windows, including 8 and 10.
Well it is still running perfectly. I am going to make a restore point and then install each update one at a time and see what happens over the course of a couple days. To see if it was the .net update or the whole cluster of updates that came after that one. Those were all security related. I don't have a good feeling about either one of them at the moment and disabled all of them.
I have been running win 7 Ultra and will not go to 8 or 10 unless work related software requires it. But at the moment all my office and AutoCAD 2015 Ultima are working as they should so if Microsoft screws it up I will be annoyed.
The one thing that may make me go up in OS will be a need for a new computer. My laptop is now getting a bit old. It is one of the first I7 based Asus units and it has been reliable as gravity but I am actually running out of HD space. I may get a new HD for it and then re install my Win 7 as I actually have the disks. Then let it update everything and then re install all the software. We will see. It is a catch 22 as if you compare the hours it takes to do this as billable time versus just purchasing a new computer it is about the same $$$$ wise in the end. The problem with this is I know I will not be able to get win 7 based machine. Everything now is being delivered with 10
You can still get Win7 machines on TigerDirect. That's where I got mine, and it came ready to go with 7. Of course, it still needed a couple gig's worth of "updates." By the time I got some software on it, I think I DL'ed about 5-6 GB of "updates" from microshaft.
You can still get Win7 machines. I order them on a weekly basis. As long as you go the "business" route, you can even get pretty new stuff. The "Upgrade to Windows 10" icon is still there, but you can ignore it. There will be a day of updates regardless.
I personally had the Win7 updates cripple me 2 years ago. I was so mad that I installed Linux Mint and haven't looked back. Its not without fault, but I'm not slowing down for updates anymore. I'm also in the Chromebook camp. It does everything I need at home.
