I still point toward the CX7 and Matrix/Vibe I listed above.

You own one of these auto Focus, right?
Yup. We’ve put almost 100k miles on it. In our case the transmission itself hasn’t technically been “unreliable” but it just doesn’t work well so it’s annoying. I do know others who have had bigger problems with far fewer miles on their car.
I like everything else about it. With a manual it would be a great commuter.
So what are the issues with the 2.3 in the 2008 Mazda3? Aside from the AC not working, it was pretty decent for a cheap 13-year-old MI car.
After reading Soo and Lake St. elsewhere, I think the bigger cars are a good choice. Or, real awd good too.
At only 110k, needing a Toyota engine seems unlikely. What if its something easier?

MIL's boyfriend had a four cylinder Escape that tried to send a spark plug through the hood (around 100k) when they were leaving my house one day. I ended up fixing that for him and he traded it in about a week later. From what I understood at the time, it was not an uncommon problem.
May be a bit late but my wife drives a 12 escape 2.5l. My requirement was 4 cylinder 2wd because the issues with the "transfer case" on the awd units. Only issues in 35k miles is an alternator bearing started squeeking. The vehicle has 121k total miles.
oh and they are known for weird rear tire wear. I rotate every 5k and in 30k miles I can certainly hear the extra noise from wear.
