Hitch rack all the way. Less lifting, less wind resistance, less bugs, no clearance problems, etc. I bought a cheap (around $100) Allen on Amazon a few years back and it's served us well. It has a pin so that you can lower it about 45 degrees to open the hatch with the bikes on it if you need to.

Just made a appt for U-Haul to install a hitch mount, looks just like the Curt model, for $188 all-in (No wiring, just the receiver). Not very grassroots, but it seems like a pretty good deal....
