Driving around the countryside today, spotted a 1st gen Mercury Cougar moldering in an abandoned looking used car lot. I've always liked these for some reason, probly cause it's not a mustangcamarofirebirdchallenger. Took a couple quick pics while DW was in the antique store across the street.

I haz questions. What is on the floor between brake pedal and parking brake?

Does the door tag tell anything useful, like engine, transmission, rear axle, etc?

My buddy has a nice '67 Cougar.  Most stop to ask questions at our local car show.

That's the ashtray.
It goes in that open slot in the dash above the trans tunnel.

I had a friend that had one in HS. The only thing besides "not a Mustang" I remember about it was the sequential turn signals. They use a small motor that looks like one for wipers to spin the contacts, cool E36 M3 for 1967. The aftermarket has solid state replacement boxes for that now because they were troublesome.

It's pretty much a Mustang with a slightly longer wheelbase. The rear leaf springs are longer than a Mustang, might be Fairlane based? All the same handling stuff should work up front.

A heavier, "luxury" Mustang. But totally cool and good enough for Dan Gurney.

It's a 67 with the A code 289 4v and I think that is Dark Ivy Green with parchment interior. My first 65 Mustang was the same color combo, but with a white vinyl roof. It's beautiful. They may have changed the names but the colors stayed the same.

That's probably how I'd spec a new one today, although it looks like it has drums in front and not discs. Open rear axle.

The pedal to the far left, above the dimmer switch, is for the windshield washer pump.

Wow, thanks for all the great info!

If I can find the owner to discuss removal from his property, I'll update here.

Not as easy to get trim parts for Cougars like Mustangs. That one looks pretty complete, though. All the Mustang suspension tricks will work on the Cat. There is a Cougar specific vendor in CA that seems pretty good. I get most of the generic parts for my Falcon from Autokrafters. They have a catalog, and online ordering is easy.

Are you sure it isn't a '68?  Side marker lights on front corners were new for the '68 model year.

Can confirm, that's a '68, unless it's had front fenders and rear quarters replaced, for reasons AC pointed out. My parents' first new car was a '67. No side-marker lights.
