I'm really surprised we haven't had 2 pages of "they are the worst thing ever and no one should ever take them and blah blah blah" like hte last one of these.

Fifty thousandy eleventy percent this.

EDIT: I would do an Alaskan Cruise or mosey down the Rhine.

They are being kept to a small amount, but non zero. Not for everyone, but like anything else, I don't see the point in talking people out of doing something. One never knows if they like doing something until they do it.

I did a 12 day Norwegian Cruise Line Caribbean cruise for my honeymoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My wife and her family have been on numerous cruises and she told me NCL was the best because it's the "Freestyle" type cruising and things are not scheduled except for the off ship excursions.

I enjoyed going to Barbados the most, because of all the awesome Asian cars there that we don't have here. A lot of the small islands are pretty cool too.

My inlaws still go on cruises. They've done a couple Trans-Atlantic cruises.

If you do go, pick and choose your excursions wisely. Most are all touristy stuff, but some can bore you to death.

IIRC, the least "structured" vacation I've ever been on was the cruise to Bermuda. WE planned nothing, did as we wanted for the two days at sea (there and back) and rented a scooter on Bermuda and rode end to end of the island stopping and doing what we wanted. One of my most structured vacations was in a car.

The Alaskan cruises look like a lot of fun. Depending on which one you do, there are lots to do when you get off the boat. My vote is to do the one that gets off in Seward or Anchorage then get sluffed along via bus up north to Denali. It's touristy but you get to see a lot more of the state than the southeast ones.
