I used to drive them a lot for work back in 2005-2006 or so. The 2005 refresh made it worse is so many ways, especially the interior and transmission programming. The NVH was worse than my 91 XJ. I remain convinced that nobody who bought an Escape actually drove a CRV first, as it was basically superior in every way.
Before I bought the 5, a 2wd 4cyl manual model was on my potential list but it was impossible to find one. They seem to be super unicorns.
