Heading to Guam on the 15th for a bit. Never been that far away before, just Oahu, HI.
Anyone?
I've been there briefly but far too long ago to have any relevant information. The island is only 30 or so miles long, I remember we rented a car and checked out a couple of beaches, the island high point and had a decent meal at one of the hotels all in the same day. The main economic drivers then and now as far as I know are the US military bases on the island. I'll assume this is a "business" trip, safe travels and hope you get some time off to check out the island.
Are you going on United ?
years ago there was a trick to go to Guam and a few other places on the same priced ticket ,
it was on Flyertalk.
There is at least one local brewery (Guam Brewery) on the island near the airport. I haven't been there, but have had their beer. Worth a check in.
Seems that I've heard that there are giant man eating slugs or dog sized frogs or something of that nature on Guam. Wish I remembered just what it was & could provide a link.
I spent time there on a TRANSPAC to Iwakuni. Snakes. Lots of snakes. Assume a snake crawled into it...no matter what 'it' is, no matter how short the time was since you last checked it for snakes, check it again.

We've been briefed on the "Rats of Unusual Size" that are there.

I'm just going to go cross Guam off my "retirement island" list now.
Just to add to the fun, apparently the brown tree snakes have eaten all the birds, which in turn has allowed the spider population to explode. And, unsurprisingly, they are not small spiders.
In reply to 02Pilot :
Yeesh. What do the snakes eat now that all the birds are gone? The giant spiders?
Edit:
"In one of the first studies to examine how the loss of forest birds is affecting Guam’s island ecosystem, biologists from Rice University, the University of Washington, and the University of Guam found that the Pacific island’s jungles have as many as 40 times more spiders than are found on nearby islands like Saipan."
How about NOPE.
In reply to mblommel :
Apparently, they'll eat almost anything they can catch and swallow. Being tree snakes, birds were just first on the menu.
I envision the end-game taking the form of a low-budget, straight-to-video movie entitled something like "Snake Swarm vs. Giant Spiders"; "The Horrors of Spider Island" was already taken:
Unlike a lot of the other islands that were returned to the japanese after ww2, since guam has that military and american presence, it feels just like america. The vibe, culture, economy, all make you feel like you're just in another american island town.

I worked for Admiral Willard many years earlier when he was a Commander. It was no surprise to me that he handled that interaction professionally. He was an amazing fighter pilot, amazing leader and amazing American. Non sibi sed patriae describes him perfectly.
Admiral Willard is on the right:
So VERY fortunately got pushed to the right. May have been this? I don't know:
I do know I am glad I am not there yet...
Winds hit 155mph. Probabaly not capped at that like some German cars though.
