On this may be the ticket for you!!!
When they launched the Evo10 body style they also changed the Ralliart to an AWD drivetrain. And then failed to market it well at all. It would be much more like the Mazdaspeed 6 in terms of comfort. I was shown one at the Mitsubishi offices in Ann Arbor, Mi area. I was shocked it was now awd and told by the engineers that it sucked that I wasn't getting any press. That also said it pulled a lot of the Evo7/8 parts bin so some aftermarket maybe transferrable. Research it some

The speed 6 is closer to the evo than it is the ralliart......if you had seen both stock on an autox course together you would understand.

Their performance numbers look similar but I suppose proof is on the tarmac.
I guess I was thinking he could pick up a 2009/2010 ralliart add maybe some suspension upgrade and have a great compromise.
Maybe the paddle shifter is a deal breaker. But just an Idea.

The speed 6 isn't a lesser model like the ralliart though.....the idea was a car comparable to the sti/evo except wearing big boy pants.
Go drive one, they roll some, but not "We're in berkeleying 100ft seas with a canoe" like the ralliart(the SEL fusion has less body roll ), they have the power of satan on tap, and they seem to have fantastic brakes. The only reason I didn't buy a MS6 was due to Shaumburg Mazda kept selling all the DCM's before I could get there with a check....
Is the MS3 too small for you? It would seem to fill the bill nicely. I think it's the same drivetrain from the MS6, just in a more versitile package.

And two fewer driven wheels, and a slight power cut.
NO FWD and NO automatics!

Why not? The most awesome vehicle ever produced by man has both!

Another thought, do I want this more than the Legacy GT? What about an WRX/STI? Is the lag that insane and is the interior that tight that I should rule them out completely?
Good friend has a LGT. I would much rather have the Speed6. For a lot of reasons. I'll just sum it all up by saying the Speed6 will make a comfortable, fairly quiet, reliable, and near perfect DD.
The LGT is kinda noisy, the seats I can't be in for more than 1.5 hours before I get real fidgety and uncomfortable. Longer than that and my back starts getting sore. You also only get a steering wheel. No controls mounted to it other than cruise. (For me in a fairly new car DD I want buttons and controls on the wheel.) This is supposed to be the nicer luxury version of a WRX/STi. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want one of those for the daily grind.
OK, time for me to start shopping for a MS6 then.

Yep, he might want to skip "Grand Touring" models though if he actually wants a key.
I'd be perfectly happy with 500 AWHP honestly. Are they really THAT strong? What's the weak point on the cars?
With 700 AWD horsepower, the weak point of the car is going to be the driver's nervous system.

From an engine standpoint? Fuel. Fuel is the big problem with these things. The FIRST thing you do with a DISI is upgrade the HPFP. The problem is they can't keep up with the demands that the rest of the system can give it (That 700whp one up there? Pretty sure that's stock injectors at like 70% duty cycle.) and it runs lean and starves cyl #4. Second, these pigs LOVE to breathe. You want to upgrade the intake side of the car ASAP. Start with the basic SRI TIP combo. I like the CPE stuff, but it's all the same. If you've got time and $$$, look into a ported intake mani, or an aftermarket one. I have an MAPerformance Rev III (Actually mine might be rev 1 as I have the original prototype for that line) eliminates the VCTS and evens out the ports for flow rates- and you pick up 100 CFM. Basic intake mods, that intake mani, and a 3" test pipe (secondary cat elim) gave me... ~30whp and something like that for torque, on 3 less PSI on a stock tune. These things like boost. WHILE YOURE IN THERE- throw the stock k04 in the garbage. The ones that Mazderp sources are notorious for hoovering seals and doing other bad things... plus they're actually kind of undersized for the car... and another reason these things pop. See, they spool SO fast (I've seen my max psi before 2500 rpm) that the fuel system cannot keep up. So they go lean, bang, you're breaking rods. The platform is there, Mazda just made some very sad design choices along the way that kept it from being a world beater.
So where would someone source the HPFP? Any idea on the prices? I'm sure you're goign to send me to a website that has it all, and that's awesome. LOL

I know firsthand you can put two forward facing car seats in a 1st gen ms3 back seat. I think one of the big drawback for the ms6 was that the seats don't fold down, but I think you can pull the bracing out and make them fold if that's important.

Oh my yes.

This is the cheap way out. The install isn't actually that hard. Alternatively you CAN get a full built one from CPE but it's sort of a pain in the ass. I'd also look for the Corksport ones- I've always had good luck with Corksport stuff. Streetunit has damn near anything you could want for that car.
Seats don't fold down in the Vic, no problem there. LOL

Oh, and for more specific (as in all the E36 M3 that happens behind the motor at the rear of the car) message JohnnyT on here. He had a pretty wicked one before he sold it for his z06.
