So....yeah. Long story short-term looks like I'm headed down to harass the southern grmers on a more regular basis. I have a basic plan in place. I'm selling off whatever I can't fit in the ms3 and the corolla, sticking those two in a truck, and shipping them. I'm probably doing it in the dead of winter because berkeley Minnesota. What advice can fl grmers give me?

Just move to North Carolina now instead of later. That way you cannot be called a halfback.

Where in FL? It's a really big state with several different distinct regions.

Bring a job if you can, employment here can be a royal pain to come by. I hope you like heat and humidity, bugs and amphibious critters. They are everywhere.

Why Orlando?

That is an extremely transient area. Low wages. Lots of things to do, salt water not far away. Having your own business is the best way to exist here, even if it is a lawn service. A lot of work in construction now, but do not expect union wages.

If I were to make a "Book of Mormon" reference here, would anyone get it?

Probably not, but go for it.

Did you go to Disney World as a kid and now think that Orlando is the most magical place in the world, and do you often break into song about it?

I've lived in FL my whole life and love it here. But I would never live in Orlando. The traffic is awful and you're not on the coast. I have friends who love it there though. Good luck.

Sometimes I think I might be the first person in history to grow up in the south-ish (Texas is its own thing, but is in the southern half of the country) who keeps moving further north and east with each job.

Most of what I know about Florida came from Carl Hiassen books so I recommend grabbing a couple for the trip down.

Tint your windows and tune up your AC. It's berkeleying HOT in the summer. Wear sunscreen.

Yeah, it's super terrible. Full of alligators, snakes, spiders, poisonous toads, etc. The people are all psychopaths, child molesters and shiny happy people. All the houses are built on swamp land. Definitely stay away. I have no idea why anybody would ever want to move there ever.

"51st State of South Florida: South Miami Passes Another Resolution Urging Secession"

So I believe that Orlando would be in the Yankee FL while Miami would be in the Redneck FL division. The border is roughly drawn along what will be the high water line when the polar caps finish melting.

I have parents and two brothers who live in the Tampa/St Pete area. They seem happy enough. If I had to live in FL, that is probably where I would look.

Personally, FL does not call to me. Nice to visit in the winter for a break, but somehow still happy to get back to London Ontario. Floridians in the summer are more prisoners of AC than a Minnesotan is of heaters in the winter; I can always put more clothes on to stay warm, but you can only strip down so far to avoid heat.

Moving in the dead of winter sucks. I did it. Slipped on ice and dropped a brand new Interstate battery carrying it to the trailer. Whaacked my elbow hard when I hit the tar then while examining it realized realized my clothes were wet. Hmmmm Oh crap! Battery acid all over my clothes! Between battery and clothes lost probably $250.00. Things like that keep happening.

Winter and moving just don't mix. If you can avoid it, do so. Everything is harder.

There's very little storage in FL homes. The attics are very short because there's no need for steep roofs and very few homes have basements. I didn't take that into account as much as I should have and had to purge a lot of things AFTER spending money to bring them to FL even though I'd sold off and thrown out a lot of stuff before moving.

I moved myself and brought 2 tow vehicles, 2-24' enclosed trailers, Sold a bunch of my cars and took 9 cars to FL. Made several trips from CT to FL with help from buds to share driving. Trailered some cars and drove some. I should have just hired a semi car carrier although many stories from the trips. Got stuck at my moms in NC for a week when a freak snowstorm hit and I was driving the Carrera down. Probably only a foot or so of snow but they didn't have hardly any plows in the town she lives in so a week passed before a plow came by. Carrera was shod with worn summer performance tires and loaded so I didn't want to take any chances. Tow vehicle radiator replacement in motel parking lot, blown trailer tires, complete tow rig stolen in Atlanta with 66 Mustang in trailer and many other not so fun things occurred while moving. The winter made everything harder.

Here's a pic I took during the final trip to remind me how much it sucked moving (and a before pic just in case it was one of those "Watch me try this" moments. Trying to load a GM mid size car into the trailer on BLACK ICE with light snow falling. Couldn't get enough traction to get the car any higher up the ramp than shown in pic. Got out, took pic, backed the car up for a running start hoping to have enough momentum to get the car in without wrecking. Pretty sketchy on a sloped parking lot of ice but I did it without damage. Or so I thought. Apparently the added force of hitting the ramp with some speed stressed the hinge mounts. Several months later I used the trailer to go to a race with one of the other cars. The hinges all snapped off the trailer door/ramp trying to load a car when the front was almost at the top of the ramp. Luckily the car landed on the tow hook and bounced out of the trailer. Only damage was the tow hook.
