What works, what doesn't and is DIY a good idea?

The only DIY project that is not a good idea is a homemade nuclear power plant.

Go for it.

My engineer father-in-law rigged up an oil evacuator using aquarium tubing, a gallon jug, and a shop vac. Damned if it didn't work just fine for changing the oil in the mower.

He basically made a larger version of this from junk sitting around the shed.

I've had a Griots Garage one for 17 years.  Haven't used it in a bit because I've had a lift and just do it the old fashioned way.  Plus the last time I tried to use it, it didn't seem to work.  It wouldn't suck.  I called Griots today on a lark to see if I could buy a rebuild kit for it.

Turns out it has a lifetime warranty and they're sending me a call tag for it and will replace it. I do need to pay the difference in cost between what I paid 17 years ago and what one costs now, but otherwise it's free...

I have two generic versions of this. They work great with cars with no drain plug. They are a pain to get the oil out, though. And storing that oily tube.

Trouble is, they don't evacuate the filter.

I keep looking at the shop air powered pneumatic one that Harbor Freight offers. It's $120 w/ the 25% off coupon and avoids all the pumping nonsense.

Griot's used to sell an air powered one but apparently they don't anymore.  Otherwise I would've gotten it.
