If you want a 1911 Clone, check out Rock Island Armory. I just picked up their 1911 Compact for carry. Plus RIA is getting some fantastic reviews for building a cut price 1911 that's every bit as good as more expensive models.
Xceler8x, .45 doesn't have any more stopping power than any other round. Shot placement, penetration, and number of shots. Does .45 have an advantage by starting out large, and on average expanding to a larger size? Yes, but we're talking fractions of an inch here.
It's more about being comfortable with your pistol, placing rounds in the right spot, and having a round that will penetrate at least 12 inches. Then shoot the person several times to be sure.

If I was starting over, I would buy a Glock-19, a good holster/belt, 500rds of FMJ from here: ammoman
Keep my trigger finger indexed along the frame and out of the trigger-guard, until I was ready to fire each round.
And burn ALL that ammo in practice (including draw, reholstering, and failure drills).
Then start to carry.
ADDED: buy another thousand rounds, you need more practice, maybe some IPSC/IDPA

Well, it'll fire unless it's timing is off or grit got in the cylinder. Your modern autoloaders are probably more reliable than a wheelgun.
Whatever you say boss!
Well you let me know when the guys over in the sandbox switch back to a 6 pot Ruger!
Personal protection is not the same as war-time soldier's. I mean, if that's the argument you're going for everyone should be armed with an M4 right?
The biggest thing here is to find the gun you are most comfortable with and practice with it until the use of that weapon is as natural as blinking. Heaven forbid you ever NEED to use it, your mind/body will not be working in a manner you are accustomed to and trying to figure out what you;re doing with your pistol is the last thing you have to worry about.
ME, I have both wheelgun and semi-auto. Oddly the fatter .38spl Rossi I have is easier for my body type to conceal, but I am prefer carrying my 1991A1Compact. It only holds 2 bullets more (7 vs 5) but the power that the proper .45 bullet transfers to the target compared to a .38 or 9mm is what makes me feel more comfortable. Both I know like the back of my hand and it takes no concious effort to operate. That's how any CC weapon should be... an extension of the body.
