because, my God, I'm falling asleep!
What a boring day...
Minor threadjack, but I feel like some good could come from (what I interpret to be) an otherwise silly thread (no offense intended, Duke):
My wife is going from a 12 hour day shift to a 12 hour night shift tomorrow night. Any tips for me or for her? Anything in particular she can do to stay alert and conscious whilst enforcing laws and such?
eat crunchy food like apples and carrots. You have to conciously chew, and it gives you some natural - not pure sugar - energy.
Eat a lot of veggies.
Keep some light food intake going. Crunchy helps me.
For me. Music, the faster paced the better. (I listen to Rammstien on Pandora for much of my work day)
Stay away from coffee, you get a surge, but a bigger crash after your caffine surge.
Beef jerkey helps me a lot on road trips and stuff to keep going.

No offense taken. Rather post a "Status Update" on here than on Facebook. Such a slow day with 2 hours left in the day. Have had 3 cups of "Rocket Fuel" (coffee) already, but it ain't workin.
Water, water, water. Plain old water. Once you drink enough of it, all you will do is get up and go pee. That can turn into an instant 10 min break.
JohnInKansas: since there is a 24hr break between shifts, you have to stay awake as long as you can to sleep as long as you can.
You must not work at a car magazine. How the heck is it already almost 4:30?? (And yes, two question marks for excitement.)

And end up like Capt Phil on Deadliest Catch too.
I eat dark chocolate covered espresso beans, otherwise, food, sitting down, nice drink= asleep on the couch at 8. Either that, or keep moving, like I do in nicer weather
looks like cigarette burns
As for me.. I can and have worked 30 hours straight... as long as I stayed on my feet and kept working.. I was fine.. but what a crash once I sat down and relaxed..
I try and keep moving too. I work different shifts every week, and lately a lot of double shifts. Since almost all of my work is outside I do alot of walking and a fair amount of jumping around like an idiot. Yesterday I worked 7a to 3p, then 10p to 6a, and inbetween went to see my parents. For the second shift I bundled up and stood in my bus stop almost the whole time. It helps that the good people of Brooklyn kept me entertained. It doesn't always work, and going home one night last week I fell asleep standing up on the Subway and missed my stop, and the next four.
