I doubt I'll travel that far west.

Is that Cabellas like all the other Cabellas I've been to or is it something different?

Dude, they have these cinnamon sugar doughnuts sold out of a trailer in front of Cabelas- they alone are worth the trip there.  Petey’s is the name of it.

Luckily HWY 17 locally has a lot of those turn right to go left intersections.

EDIT: They are RCUT and not MLT intersections. Close, but just enough different that I will be confused the first time.

Are you actually staying in Detroit or 30 miles out in the suburbs?   Metro Detroit is huge and food suggestions differ by region. Do you like beer? If you are are down around Midtown get a beer and a pizza (not Detroit style) at Motor City Brewing.  If you want a Detroit style pie, I like Buddy's.  If you want an excellent pint of beer and are out near Warren, Kuhnhenn Brewing is some of the best beer in the region.   If you are down in Corktown, skip Slow's and stop by Batch Brewing for a microbrew and great food.  If you want a burger in Corktown, Mercury Bar is good.  Green Dot Stables is a great place to get some sliders in the same neighborhood.

If you like art, the Detroit Institute of Art never disapoints.

+1 to the Mercury, Green Dot, and of course Slow’s.  Also not far from Corktown, but I don’t think I’d walk, is Mexicantown, where you will get the cheapest legit delicious Mexican this side of Tepotzotlan.

also, I’m building a Challenge car in Canton zip 48187, so there’s that.

Wrench on Angry's unholy Cor2rd/CorSquared (Corvette/Corvair) Challenge mash-up.  Hell, come to my house and wrench on my Cougar with me.

When weather improves, take a slow drive around Belle Isle and tour the various facilities.  If here through August, look in to the hydroplane races on the Detroit River.

Ice skate at Campus Martius Park downtown

Plenty of mentions of Henry Ford and Greenfield Village.  Just wanted to add my vote for both as well.  Henry Ford in inclement weather, Greenfield Village (outdoors) when it's nice.  The massive steam locomotive and steam engines are AWESOME!

Detroit Institute of Arts (art museum) is world renowned.  Awesome Diego Rivera mural and armor collection.

Shows/concerts at Fox Theater, Little Caesars Arena, St. Andrew's Hall, DIA (Sunday morning concerts), Fillmore, Cliff Bell's(good food too).

A wide variety of great restaurants are available in the city, both new and long-standing.  Selden Standard, Slows (BBQ), London Chop House, Rattle Snake Club, Chartreuse, Green Dot Stables, Mexican Town (southwest Detroit), Republic, Mercury Burger Bar, etc.  Sugar House is cool if you like craft cocktails.

AutoRama (hot rods, customs, rat rods) coming in March.  Cobo Hall.  Great show and BIG!

Bring your passport and go to Windsor, Canada.  EZ in and out through the tunnel.

See the giant fist downtown Detroit and the former central train station (when going to Slows, Mexican Town, Mercury area)

If you're in to amusement parks, your not far from Cedar Pointe.

This years Hot Rod Power Tour ends at Norwalk Park on Friday June 14th.

The annual Woodward Dream Cruise is Saturday August 17th.  Whole lot of car activities around that event including drag racing in Pontiac.  For that matter, the M1 Concourse in Pontiac does some great C&C events and car shows starting once things defrost a bit.  There are also other local cruises set up before and after the Woodward event like the Downriver Cruise, Gratiot Cruise, etc.

Plenty of casino action if that's your thing (also in Toledo and Windsor).  Motor City had some design help from Chip Foose.  It's cool to see from the outside at night.

Lot of local car shows once weather improves.  Good Ford show at their Dearborn World HQ, GM has an employees show that's cool to see.

I hear the ACD Museum (Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg) in northern Indiana is cool.  I have not been however.

Tour Indian Village area in Detroit then continue up Jefferson Ave along the river to see where the money was then where the money went in Detroit.

Tour the Pewabic Pottery in Detroit (near Indian Village).

GM used to have some cool cars at the Renaissance Center (GM HQ) in Detroit.

Speaking of Renaissance, MI has a good Festival (if you like that kinda thing) weekends August thru September.

That's all for now.  I'll probably think of more soon though.

Drive around Detroit and listen to Bob Seger and Sweaty Ted?

For more current music, tune your dial to

  • 88.7 CIMX (if under 30 yrs old)
  • 93.9 CIDR (if over 30 yrs old)

These are sister station operating from the same ownership.  Notice that the call letters do start with W or K.  That's because they originate out of Windsor, Canada. Given that Canada has its own radio agency (not the FCC which is US) these two stations pump out the strongest signals in the Detroit Market.

Their format is also unlike anything you'll find in The US (or Canada for that matter.)

88.7 format is Alternative, Modern Rock

93.9 format is Adult Alternative

And if you still have the humor of a 13 yr old, 101.1 WRIF in the mornings for the Dave and Chuck the Freak show.  One of my guilty pleasures.

Detroit region SCCA has some pretty good autocross events.  I have been away for a few years now but they used to bring out 200 plus entrants.

Waterford Hills road course is cool as well.

Roush Industries in Livonia opens his private collection for tours at various times throughout the year.  Impressive for sure.

Lingenfelter Collection (Wixom area) opens up for similar tours at times as well.

If you're here Labor Day weekend, the Arts, Beats, and Eats Festival in Royal Oak is a good time.

Couple of hours drive time gets you to the northwest side of the lower peninsula for Sleeping Bear sand dunes, Silver Lake sand dunes (drive on in), Traverse City area, Leelenau area.  Beautiful part of the state.

Drive in to Chicago in about 4.5 hours.

Use the Bandsintown app to find a good show at the Masonic, Fillmore Detroit, Fox, or any of the smaller venues including the Token Lounge in Westland.

I spent a few days in Michigan a couple years ago and fell in love. Made an impromptu stop on the way from Detroit to Grand Rapids to meet some friends of friends on their farm.

We went here for dinner/beers, and it was hands-down the best beer/dinner/chatting with total strangers combo I’ve ever had. I would fly up there JUST to hang in this tiny town again.

Also: BEER! ALL THE BEER! I could spend weeks just visiting breweries/brew pubs. Michigan is really berkeleying cool.
