So on Sunday August 28th, I'm taking a trip with the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society from Edon, Ohio to Hillsdale Michigan and back. There is a three hour layover at Hillsdale. I'm from Central New York, so this is new territory for me. What is there to see/do/visit/eat/drink within walking range of the Indiana Northeastern depot on Monroe Street that can be done in three hours?

Bump for the weekday crowd. Also, I will be spending a couple nights in Edon, Ohio if any GRMers are in the area and want to meet up. And I plan to take a day and drive up to Dearborn and go to The Henry Ford.

Looks like Edon is relatively close to Auburn, IN. The Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum is definitely worth a visit.

I lived in the Toledo Ohio most all of my life.  Seems that Edon, OH is so small, I had to map it to realize it is just 1 hour west from Toledo.  For the couple days in Edon, I'll recommend the following few thing...

You will be just 30 minutes SW from The Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg Museum located in the old factory that made these models.  Very cool car stuff.

Also 30 minutes NW away from Edon in Angola, IN is Pokagon State Park on Lake James.  A very popular swimming, camping and Lodge location.  A very nice and large park.  A clean lake to swim in.

For history sake, 30 minutes East of Edon in Archbold, OH is Sauder Village, similar to Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford Museum, this is a replica of a a farm and farm town of 1803-1920.  So, they have a demonstration like a working blacksmith shop and old-timey shops and experiences.  Back story, this place is the pet project of the founders of Sauder Furniture, that ikea-like manufacturer of inexpensive, chip board, book cases and entertainment centers, etc all founded in the same town of Archbold, OH.

Edon will mostly just be my home base to eat dinner and sleep at.

Itinerary looks roughly like

Friday: Leave home, get into Ohio at around 5-6pm.

Saturday: Chase excursion from Edon, Ohio through Indiana up to Hillsdale and back. Not sure on the time frame, but if it's anything like the Reading & Northern trips from Reading-Jim Thorpe (which are similar length), it'll likely be an all-day thing, get back at around 5-6pm.

Sunday: Ride excursion from Edo, Ohio to Hillsdale and back. Same time frame as the day before.

Monday: Drive up to Dearborn to visit The Henry Ford and return to Edon.

Tuesday: Head for home.

I see your profile says Rome, NY.    Why on Monday night would you head back to Edon?  That has you going 2+hours back Westerly.   The Henry Ford can be an all day event.

The fastest way home from Dearborn, MI would be through Canada.  Do you have a passport?

Or, take the US route:

In reply to John Welsh :

Ah, true, it might make more sense to spend Monday night, and even Sunday night, in Toledo. The decision to go to Dearborn was kind of a last minute addition after I looked at a map and realized I was going to be fairly close. I do not have a passport, I do have the NY State Enhanced Driver's License that can supposedly get you in and out of Canada and Mexico, but I've never actually used it. I also didn't think of going through Canada because for so long Canada was not allowing any traffic from NY over the border.

Yeah, it is a one hour time savings to go through Canada, but you might also loose 30 minutes entering Canada and 30 minutes re-entering America  = net, zero time savings.

I live drectly between Toledo and Cleveland in Sandusky, OH area.  Our claim to fame here other than Lake Erie is one of the worlds greatest Roller Coaster Amusement Parks, Cedar Point, if that's your kind of thing.  It too can be an all day event.

I might be available for a brunch meet-up as you pass through.  But, you're also facing a full day of driving and need less slow down.

Cleveland, OH (which you'll pass right through) also has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, if that's your kind of thing.

You'll need to log in to post.
