Feels weird. Leaving completely amicably and doing what I can to ease the transition to the folks who are taking over.
Starting a dream job in motorsports, which I've sort of been doing on the side, so it isn't a huge mystery of what I'm getting into.
Just feels weird handing the reigns over. Certainly there is stuff I won't miss, but I will certainly miss most of the personalities. Feels like i'm retiring.
Busted my butt to get all the transition stuff out of the way so things were not left undone. Now I have, a solid two days of not doing a whole lot other than answering random little questions but having no real responsibility what so ever.
Sounds like you're moving on to bigger, better and more interesting things! Congrats! We would love to hear more details about your future motorsports plans!
I'll be working for Vermont SportCar as their event coordinator. They manage Subaru Rally Team USA and the Subaru/Puma Rallycross program. Basically a logistics position, sort of a rally travel agent. It uses a lot of the knowledge I've learned over the years with the job I'm vacating along with stuff I've learned working with various car clubs. It suits me, and I'm excited to "start" it(I've worked part time the last few months).
I was just quite surprised how hard it was to decide to leave my other career. Since they are first class organization, the place I'm leaving has been nothing but awesome to me in the transition, makes it that much harder.
Sounds like a cool job, congrats.
When you leave a job where you really like your coworkers and have been there a log time, it's like leaving family. Best of luck on your new endeavor, it sounds awesome!
Congratulations! That's a long enough time I figure the old gig was good, too. But hope you enjoy the transition; sounds like winning to me!
It great that you are going after the dream job. Even more impressive is that you have a current job you seem to like. Congrats on both!

speaking of which … ECM, how is your new job working out ?
Well, it appears that I was used. After two months of everything going great, I got an e-mail on a Sunday morning telling me my services were no longer needed. A berkeleying e-mail! Seems that once I had showed him how it was done he was done with me. This came as a real blow, very much unexpected, and only a few weeks before Thanksgiving. So, I am back on the market.
C'est la vie.
sachilles, that's great news! Best of luck to you.
ECM, sorry to hear about that. If it helps I once got let go via a phone call at home on a Sunday morning. Then the same guy tried to hire me back a couple of years ago. You can imagine how THAT conversation went.

Sorry to hear that - before email was used my wife worked for a guy that sent out a group of Saturday Fed Ex envelopes firing a bunch of the shop guys. I thought that was lousy.
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the kind words. I didn't post about it on GRM because I was a mixture of ashamed and depressed. I don't want to derail sachilles thread with bad mojo.

That's not bad mojo...it's EastCoastMojo. I haven't been on here all that much the past year, so I didn't see thread about your new/old job, but good luck in the job hunt and hopefully this thread's Sachilles good mojo will rub off on you.
Sachilles, sounds like you're doing it right. That kinda reputation will follow you around, youll go far in life that way. good on you!
ECM, that really blows. You always seem to handle things with class though. I'm sure if anyone can, youll be the person to turn these lemons into 110 octane race fuel!
Sachilles, congrats on the job. If out paths ever cross I owe you a beer.
Mojo: sorry to hear about it.

Just got home from last NER rallycross of the season, in Ludlow, VT. Will there be more VT rallyx options in the near future? Good luck!
Be sure to offer your services to your former employer, as a independent consultant... At triple your rate of pay...

Sachilles, congrats on chasing and realizing your dream.
ECM, may the scurvy shyster bastard who pulled that E36 M3 on you have his crotch infested by the fleas from 1,000 camels. I really hope karma puts foot to ass on that piece of work.

Actually, we sort of have a little deal worked out. I'll be consulting through the holiday season, and it's worth my while ;). They are treating me well on exit. It's not one of those weird sour grapes type of separations. Hoping it translates into a go-kart for my son for his birthday in January.
I'm hearing rumors of a going away party, that will actually be a roast. I'm a bit of a wisea$$ to my friends, so that should be entertaining.
Have a good young guy taking over for much of my former responsibilities. We made the realization that he was only 6 years old when I started working here.
So today is D-day.
What a super cool opportunity. I, for one, would love a new job "build" thread, as time permits. My job isn't even remotely interesting, but yours sounds like it will be a lot of fun and something we could live vicariously through!
Congrats on your new opportunity.
In 99 I left a cushy job of 13 years for a dirty, nasty, but high paying factory job where I was just a number. I worked my way up, and it was the best move I've ever made, but 11 years later, the plant was scheduled to close, and I transferred out (my choice) to another facility within the same company. Hardest thing I've ever done in my career. It was, as people have said, like leaving family. That was 3 years ago. The plant didn't close, and now my old job available. It would mean 110 miles/day vs 40 now, so I've been thinking about it all weekend. Monday is the last chance to speak to them.

Now that's just absurdly awesome! A bug needs to be put in someone's ear about a Spec Gator class.

I like the way you think.
