I got a call from my sister that my nephews were learning to play Runnin' With The Devil by Van Halen this morning. It begins...

Our local shop had a nearly new Jazzmaster--no extra knobs, black w/tortoise shell, no tremolo, right price. It was exactly the one I wanted, but I waited too long.

In reply to David S. Wallens:

Yeah, when you see a deal, you have to jump on it!!! The only time I ever waited and it worked out was with my Goth Thunderbird bass... and that's probably because it was in an antique shop and it wasn't an antique. All my other stringed purchases were spur-of-the-moment decisions.

For instance, my Epi Les Paul Standard... I went to one of those big holiday Guitar Center sales back around 2000 and I picked it up and loved it. It looks just like Ian F's 1971 LP, but with the stock pickups. It was priced right, and I wanted it, but I wanted to play some other stuff before I made my decision.

I set it down and went to diddle with other guitars, and I decide that I want the LP. I come back, and someone else was playing it! HOW DARE THEY!!!! That was MINE! I stood there, arms folded, and waited for him to eventually put it down. As soon as it hit the rack, it got picked back up by me, brought to the register, and brought to the trunk of my car.

Also, I've asked before, but are there any drummers perusing this thread?

I am going to be rehabbing my old practice kit: a 10 year old Sonor Force 1001 (nothing special) to sell, and I was going to take pics and post 'em up of the process. I have not been in a band in 8 years, and I don't need two drum kits anymore. If I do, I can always go buy another later on.

Oh, and if anyone is interested in a nice solid beginner/intermediate kit that sounds pretty good, let me know.

I added a new bass to the arsenal, it's an early S.D. Curlee(probably a '77, but I need to check the dates on the pots).

I bought it from a local bassist/friend/mentor who got it used in the late-70's, and I've been bugging him to sell it to me for the last 27-years or so.

These are a bit odd, as they're essentially a bolt-on neck-through design.

With the DiMarzio Model One pickup and incredibly dense body(it has to be over 10lbs) it puts out a great punchy sound that sustains for days. I'm not sure how long my shoulder can handle it though...

I bought another bass this weekend: a mid-'70s, short-scale Univox Hi-Flyer. Something about that Mosrite shape lured me in. Plus it just felt like butter.

This cool part of the story:

So after debating the guitar for too long, I finally stopped by our local shop (Guitar Attic) Saturday morning. From there I headed straight to Albany, Georgia, to see Five Eight, an Athens band I have been seeing since college. I know the guys, so we hang out when ever possible.

During the soundcheck, I asked Dan, their bassist, if he wanted to try the bass. Last time I saw them he let me try his bass, so I felt it was only right to return the gesture.

He looked at my bass, unplugged his '78 P-bass, and used mine for the rest of the soundcheck. The Univox growled nicely.

Afterward he asked: Hey, mind if I use it for the show?

Of course, I said. And he did.

VERY cool.Sometimes those short scale basses can be fun to play.

I have a weird "Kingston" (I think) short scale bass from the 60's that needs, well, it needs to be thrown away. I only got it WAY back because it kinda looked like a Thunderbird, but now that I have an actual Thunderbird, I really have no interest in it. It's probably worthless, so I'm planning on harvesting the killer humbucker in it and tossing the body.

OK, David, I gotta give it to ya. That Univox is friggin sweet. I didn't even know they made a high-flyer bass. And yeah, you HAD to pick that one up.

As for me, I swapped speakers in my amps. Does that count for anything?

Somehow or another I haven't seen his thread before. I've been getting back into playing guitar the past couple months after about 5 years of not playing. Despite hauling 4 guitars and my half stack around for half a dozen moves...

I recently traded into a PRS se245. I've always wanted one but couldn't justify $3k on the custom models. This thing plays great and I'm quite impressed with the quality of this thing.

The PRS and my Marshall AVT50 head with 4x12 cab. I bought the amp my senior year of high school back in 2002. I used to play for about 1 1/2 a day. Mostly metal and obnoxious noise.

My other two guitars are a Fender acoustic. The grey one I had built in 2003 to resemble a dual cut away PRS. I got the body off eBay and put an AllParts neck on it and put Zakk Wylde EMG active pickups in it.

I'm slowly getting my fret work back down, and trying to actually learn scales and such. Not just reading tabliture and playing covers of simple stuff.

I haven't had nearly enough time to play lately, however, both my nephews are now taking guitar and bass lessons from a really good local guitar player. He's filling in on the metal band Shadows Fall's final tour. They are both learning lots!

Lately my short-scale Univox bass has become my go-to guitar. It's light and just growls nicely. Plus I love the feel of the flat-wounds.

Please, don't tell my Geddy.

I need a better pic of my latest, but...

and the back side:

That's a custom pinstriped Reverend Horton Heat 6120. The striping was all done by hand by the massively talented Hot Rod Walt.

In reply to Tim Baxter:

Neat pin-striping... although I'm not sure I could play a guitar that pretty. The backs of my guitars are beat to hell. The back of my Studio looks like somebody used it for tenderizing steaks...

Since getting my '84 Les Paul Studio back, it's gone back to being my #1 with the Strat back to #2. I've barely touched the others since. I ordered some new pick-ups for my old ESP Horizon (S-D Screamin Demon & JB Jr), so I'm hoping getting that back together will fun. The next project after that will be rebuilding my Tele-mutt. After that, I think I'll start reducing the quiver a bit. The '71 Les Paul and 80's MiJ Charvel will likely go on the block.

It is almost too pretty, but Walt plays the hell out of his, and I think he'd be offended if it wasn't getting played. They're made to be used.
