I hate to canoe my own thread but there is an update....
I have the support of my boss an he is pushing my s.o and I to go...
If all goes right I will be moving to lexington about mid august.... (really mid august, I bet it's just a bit warm and a bit damp)....for the store opening in september (he says late 3rd quarter).
Everything is panning out and my gf and I are planning a trip( from Minneapolis) to check apartments or town homes out in 6 weeks.
So I ask are there any areas to avoid... we would like to be near the south side by the "fayette... mall"
Or any areas to suggest...?
Yeah there is a few areas to avoid. My B.I.L. used to live there. I couldn't tell you now where they are but do your research.

These are a few sites I use to research an area.
My wife lived near UK and liked it, despite it being kind of funny around Basketball season. Woodland Park was really nice back then too.

I lived in the Gainesway subdivision, AKA Tates Creek outside the Circle. Buncha code enforcement Nazis there, but livable. But before that, we rented a house off Pasadena Dr, inside the Circle, west of Nicholasville Rd. Besides being a "busy" connector road, it was a very quiet neighborhood. Both places put me about 10 min away from the mall.
Personally, I would avoid Woodhill around the Circle and anything on the NW side of town. Pretty much far game after that. I would also avoid being close to the mall at ALL COSTS.
Once again I hate to bump myself... but an update!!!!
First off thanks so much for all the input, it really has made me feel better about things.
My Girlfriend have decided to go for it and we will be moving to Lexington around the first of June (a lot faster than I had planned but we can make it work)..
Congratulations Cats!!!
I just wanted to share some info with you and show you how things have progressed...
We will not be able to view an apartment before we move in but with some googlefu we can get a good vibe of an area... (looking about 5 miles east of the mall, and a bit south)...
Well, thanks guys and gals and see you in bluegrass country soon!
So if you ever need some "hippie groceries" or see an Intense blue ACR Neon, say hi or YO!
Thanks for all the input and anymore is always welcome!
I used to live there (well, Georgetown) and I agree that the Craigslist fare was pretty good...Much better than where I'm at now (stupid Illinois).
See you all in 5 weeks!! Thanks so much for all the info!
You guys and girls have been so much help, moving 900 miles away...
Thank you!
Here is a random update...
Lexington is a great place to live!
It looks like my S. O and I will be headed back to MN to take new jobs there at two new stores...
The people here are amazing...They cant drive, but they are very nice and proud of their town...Go Cats!
The traffic is not the best, it is true... the store that I work at is on Nicholasville road... probably the busiest road in lexington...and it can be a bear but there are other routes to where you need to go.
Most people don't know where they are going they seem to be just "out and about." But that is my northern sensibilities talking
I live on the south side of town and rarely go downtown but it seems like a safe place to be.
ZOMG bourbon!!!! If you ever get a chance take ANY bourbon tour.
Everybody goes out to eat...all the time.
The Bluegrass area of Kentucky is probably one of the most beautiful and believe it or not diverse (culturally and botanically) areas I have ever seen,
All and all Lexington has been a fabulous experience, It is a safe, homey, town that would be a great place to live.
Have you been to Commonwealth Stadium for tailgating & a game?
Next Saturday should be an awesome day, hit Keeneland & then tailgate before the UK - Alabama game.
Just wait for basketball season! 40-0, Lexington will be a madhouse when they bring home #9!
I miss Kentucky.
I work in the Lexington area, although I commute about ~90 minutes a day there instead of living there. Its a cool town, glad you like it.
Hit the Maker's Mark distillery tour down here in Loretto, you'll love the roads leading to it.
Glad to know you're enjoying the Bluegrass. It's a wonderful state I wouldn't wanna live anywhere else.
I lived there for seven years. Well, actually I lived in Georgetown.
I CAN NOT BELIEVE no one mentioned how awesome the roads are in that area, for driving. There are endless winding two-lane black-top roads, in "the hills," and through the horse farms. Everything out in the country is well-paved and the scenery is beautiful...
Also, there is a "town" near there called Skullbuster! How awesome is that?
(I am now in western Illinois and I have berkeley-all for nice roads to drive on. It's the worst place I've ever seen for driving.)
ALSO #2, you need to look up the Keeneland Concours!!
Keeneland Concours!! Keeneland Concours!! Keeneland Concours!! Keeneland Concours!! Keeneland Concours!! Keeneland Concours!!
I've been three times and it's always awesome.
Keeneland Concours pictures to give an idea what it's like:

I'm glad you like it! I'm 90 miles east in Elizabethtown, but have always enjoyed my trips to Lexington. They have a great autocross region there too (if you're into that sort of thing).
because of this thread all my ads are now Lexington,KY tourism ads.

Oh yeah, Kentucky has a property tax on cars, based on their book value or age(or both), I think. Not great if you like to drive late model cars, but wonderful if you have a fleet of older stuff.
I lived in Covington KY (just across from Cincy) for 10 years, glad to be back in OH. When I bought the xB, the dealer gave me a check to take when I got my regular plates. It was over $1000 that first year. I heard a gentleman in the next window over get his checkbook out to write a similar check on his own. I could not imagine.
Gimme $50 OH plates anyday. (Although the Talon was down to about $1200 KBB value and $20 plates by the time I sold it.)
