Here's one for all you communist sympathizers who think that China is "almost" a free country and a heck of a nice place to build cheap crap for U.S. consumption:

Ive never met anyone who feels that "China is 'almost' a free country and a heck of a nice place to build cheap crap for U.S. consumption". This is a NO TROLLING zone. There is no parking between here and the curb anytime.

Uuuuhhhh. Okay. Who thinks China is even "almost" a free country? I think I'm missing something.

(edit) Actually, now that I think about it, this is kind of a reminder of how great we have it. As much as we sometimes complain about "the government" interfering with our lives (I usually feel strongly about this when I'm trying to get one of my goofy cars registered) we really do have a wonderfully free country. God bless America!

I think it's funny that China is called a communist country, its more of a totalitarian state.

Uuuuhhhh. Okay. Who thinks China is even "almost" a free country? I think I'm missing something.

There have been posts on other threads where people have talked about how China was almost a free country. They've extolled how different it is from public perception. I have no doubt it's different from public perception, but this underscores some of those differences.

And I will address this part of the statement:

  • First of all, it has nothing to do with "liberty"
  • It is clearly a good place to build "cheap crap" based on the amount being made there
  • If you are implying that China can only create "cheap crap" you are mistaken. The reason they make so much "cheap crap" is that Walmart (as an example) and the US consumer don't want to pay for "good crap"
  • China is fully capable of making "good crap", you just have to ask for it and of course pay the higher price for it.

And I will address this.

It has everything to do with liberty. Should we reward a country with a long list of human rights violations with the economic benefits of essentially unrestricted trade?

Just because everyone's doing it doesn't make it right.

If I pick up a random piece of cheap crap and look for the country of origin, what am I likely to find? I don't doubt that someone, somewhere in China is cranking out good crap, but I would opine that it makes up but a small percentage of their total exports.

I have and will continue to purchase alternatives to Chinese-made products. Inevitably, I will pay more. This is the price of naive idealism, I suppose.

Does anyone consider why things are cheaper to produce in China? Could it have anything to do with the fact that manufacturers don't have to deal with the EPA, the FDA, unions and any number of other organizations whose purpose is to prevent abuse of the environment, the customer, and the worker? What is the Chinese government's position on the billions of dollars of counterfeit goods that enter this country? Children's toys containing lead and cadmium? Food products containing high levels of chemicals banned in the U.S.? Let a man speak out about how his child was poisoned and he is thrown in jail. Nothing to see here.

We aren't going to have it that great for long if we keep selling our debt to China and buying all their goods. Am I the only one who can see where that is going to lead?
