Learn me, an opportunity is coming up at a solid startup(there are actually tons of interviews on the horizon.. I guess I'm desirable).. Schools, I have 3 small kids, are important. Should I live closer to Omaha? The draw is it puts us within a days drive of my wifes parents by rockford IL.

Lincoln has a large engineering/architect community - must be the University.

I80 across Nebraska and Iowa - you win!

There isn't much between Omaha and Lincoln that is easy enough to commute for.

I moved to Lincoln with my family when I was 12 and graduated from HS in a burb of Omaha at 18. Left as fast as I could but my mom and sister still live in the area.

Here is the negatives for Lincoln in my eyes.

  1. Very heavy on the taxes compared to the salary. The state has a balanced budget amendment on file so the make sure that they cover it all.

  2. Not really much happening outside the State or university and the industries they pull in. Be cautious to see what the fall back options are if you do need to move companies.

  3. Cold ass winters. It'll regularly be below zero with the wind chill.

  4. Not a huge amount of things to do and limited options close. They have some things right there and the university brings in some entertainment but don't expect a anything nearly cosmopolitan.

  5. Very limited racing options that aren't dirt oval. Now they do have great dirt oval racing though.

  6. I wan't impressed with the schools. Really big and they just shove people through it felt like unless you went to the catholic HS.

Positives:

  1. As long as you are away from the university area, it's a pretty safe city. There are some drug problems there but if you stay on the nicer parts of town it's very isolated.

  2. There is a lot of green space and parks there. Also, you can bike and walk all over town with little issues. I use to go everywhere on my bike and walking. With that there is also a lot of youth sports leagues.

  3. This can go either side depending on your viewpoint but it is very much mid-western conservative. Don't expect a lot of liberal thinking.

  4. Great beef. It is in the beef capital of the world.

That is my run down. I would never move back without something that was driving me back there from a family prospective.

Thanks.

This is the draw, plus cheap cost of living.

My grandfather lives in Lincoln. He used to live right on a lake just 5 minutes west of the city. Walk out your back porch and onto a boat. That was sweet.

But it is a small city.

Well aware of the of the Silicon Prairie Part Duex that is happening in Ames and Lincoln. (Part 1 was Texas in the 80's) They are spreading from Austin as it's gotten too big here over the last 8-10 years.

I've been recruited more than once to come home by friends over the last 3 years. I've politely ignored them

More than happy to answer any questions. I'm back there all the time.

We shall see how the face to face goes. I got stuff in Boston and Miami and Atlanta cooking, with no pressure to move.

And regular Solo nationals, and they do use the site all season for local events too.

There is a road course not too far away, in Pacific Junction, IA-- Raceway Park of the Midlands. http://www.midamericamotorplex.com/site/Home If you've seen the youtube video with the guy shouting "NEMISIS!" that's the course.

Our club runs HPDEs there, and they run open track days most Fridays.

Went out there and took a look. The area surely is growing. Boy is it cheap to live and closer to family. Still don't know if I'll take the offer if I get it.

Ahhh. And now that is the other down side of Nebraska and the upper mid west in general....the pay scale is way off. You see why things are cheap because they don't pay much there.

Oh well right?
