Son will go to university out of state this fall. He will not have a car.
What’s the best way ($) to insure him for the brief times he will be home? Including summer breaks.
Other info: Currently he is on the USAA auto policy with my wife and me. We have three cars - he is “primary driver” on one. When he goes away we will sell car #3.
I need a strategy and this place delivers.

My son is still local (unrelated long story best told over beers) but somewhere or other I saw an option for 'distance student' or some such designed as an option for kids who are at school or in the military, and will only use a car when they come home.
Prb best to give them a call and ask directly. Teenagers having less access to flog your cars shouldn't make your rates go up
19 year family member lives in Australia
has usa DL
lives with us 60 days every summer.
I call agent and add them to 60 day policy.
My policy (Allstate) has a kids in college more than 100 miles away policy. It dramatically reduces the cost. Just have to send them a transcript showing what's what. Call your agent and see if they have something similar.

Ain't that the berkeleying truth
Thanks everyone. I will contact USAA and definitely update the plan when he is away for real, and again when I drop 3rd car. That should definitely help.
I’m also curious if anyone has kid(s) on an independent policy. I’ve been thinking about doing that anyway, since he is 18 now and I don’t really want an accident to potentially wreck me financially. If he is away with no car, it seems like that gets more complicated...

As he's your dependent and still in college I'm not sure you can fully drop him from the policy.
