I know there are a few audiophiles on here and wanted to pick your brains for a minute.  We want to do a nice, but economical (less than $500) surround sound system for our family room,  When the house was built, I ran wiring for the speaker locations to where the receiver would be - front L and R, center, rear L and R.  Subwoofer wiring will be easy. With Black Friday coming, there will be some decent deals.

We also want the ability to connect to a bluetooth speaker or similar on our deck so we can have something playing inside and outside once the deck is complete. Is that possible?

Is there anything in particular we should be looking for? Brands to get/avoid? We'll be hooking up the TV, rarely used BlueRay , and cable box to it. If we can stream from our phone that would be cool too.

Thanks!!!

So you'll need 5 speakers plus a sub and a receiver for 500?

Something of a tall order, but probably do-able with an all-in-one package.  Look for something like this:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Onkyo-5-1-6-Channel-Surround-Sound-Speaker-System-black-HT-S3900/711383978?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&adid=22222222222119717579&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=s&wl2=c&wl3=74354563992005&wl4=pla-4577954141445266&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&%20wl10=Walmart&wl12=711383978_10000000513&wl14=onkyo%20surround%20sound%20system&veh=sem

I find that Onkyo stuff is pretty solid even at this price point.

Check out LINK. They have great deals and great customer service.
for speakers, are you willing to do a very simple  build?  One that my daughter did when she was 13?  If so, google Parts Express c notes.
i have a Pioneer Elite Sc-05 receiver I've been meaning to sell. Let me know if your interested.
it's an absolute powerhouse. Elite is to Pioneer what AMG is to Mercedes, or Type-R was to Honda.

I have an ancient Sony Dream System that still works for me, think I bought it in 01 or so. I'm not an audiophile though

Estate sale or an overly busy ReStore in an affluent area where the manager doesn't have the time to research pricing on gear.

To stay under $500, I'd look for a used Onkyo, pioneer or even sony es receiver. You'll probably be looking at second hand jbl or polk book shelves for your front and rears and used polk or klipsch for the sub.

The great thing is, The setup can evolve over time. If a great deal on some kg2, kg4, heresies or fortes pop up, then your fronts get upgraded and what you have in the fronts go to the rear and you sell your rears, likely for what you have in them. If a marantz receiver pops up, same thing. That's where the hobby gets fun. You can start with a budget under $1,000, then fine deals, sell equipment that you upgraded from and end up with a setup that's worth 6 to 8 grand having spent less than $1200.

Two sets of C-notes.

One C-note center channel.

Used powered Klipsch/CV/Polk sub from FB $100

Used Onkyo/Yamaha/Sony/Kenwood/etc receiver from FB for $50

Ta Dahh..... $450.

It will actually sound pretty baller.  I did pretty much this exact thing, but I went with all new stuff and I came in at about $1000.  I did the C-notes for front and rear, but that was before they had developed the C-note center channel so I splurged on a really nice Polk center.  I got an Image Dynamics sub that I can't recommend highly enough, but it was over $200 itself.  I have a Yamaha receiver that I really like, but it's a bit complex to operate.  Fortunately I have it all set up now through ARC/CEC so I never have to touch its remote.

Another huge plug for the C-note speakers, and not just because I built them myself.  They really do a fantastic job.  Smooth crossovers and easily cover down to about 100 hz.  I think I have my sub low-passed at 120hz or so and the whole system really sparkles.  Overkill for my small living room.

Curtis, we've been on the same audio page many times. The C note surround sound is really the hot ticket here.
to the OP:

if you really want back for your buck buy a receiver (used or from the link I posted) and build yourself a great 2.1 systen for $500. Then as $ permits, add the other three channels.

Thanks for all the advice!

I ended up pulling the easy button, but did leave myself room for upgrades. Costco was having sales and I ended up ordering a Yamaha TSR-700 receiver and Klipsch Reference Theater Pack 5.1 speakers. More than enough for what we need. I bumped the budget up a bit to do it, but with the sales, it was almost $200 off list prices. Also, since I bought them at Costco, there is more warranty.

I really liked the idea of the C-Note speakers, but given the other projects on my plate right now, it wasn't the right option.

Thanks again GRM!!!
