That video shows a guy replacing one, and shows a more traditional style spring loaded tensioner pulley that the shock attaches to.

I really don't know for sure though, nor do I know why the Mercedes engineers would think that their belt tensioner needs a shock adsorber.

Hard to say... although my TDI has one on the belt tensioner as well. When it went bad, the belt vibrated like hell on the pullies. Might have something to do with inherent diesel vibrations.

Regardless, I'm not sure it would work as an engine damper as the valving will be designed to resist the spring pressure of the tensioner.

From the video the tensioner has its own springload so this shouldn't have any "push" to it.
