And nothing of value was lost. I'm convinced that George Lucas made the original Star Wars trilogy good through a mixture of accident and heavy compromise.

That's discussed in this film
that I watched recently. They did a good job of discussing both sides (creative control for an artist vs. altering details (or tone) that a fan community holds as important) without getting preachy and promoting one view over the other.
One thing they pointed out that I found interesting was that Lucas lobbied congress to prevent changes to film (the colorization of old B&W films) because they were an important part of the American cultural landscape. Then - after his films are part of the National Film Archive - he alters them.
That change fundamentally weakened the storyline of a major character.

Page two and nobody's posted it yet? They just wanted the music rights so they could play this at Board meetings.

What's weird is the timeline in all this. Disney/Lucasfilm is saying a 2015 release for Episode 7. Even if it's LATE in 2015, like at Christmas time, then you have to believe that this film has already been scripted, approved and is deep into pre-production.
My guess is that Disney already had a team (probably headed by Brad Bird) working on Star Wars content in conjunction with Lucas, and once everyone was on the same page it just turned out to be easier to buy the cow than to keep milking it.
I just don't think you can go from wrapping up a deal to restarting a major tentpole franchise that will have implications not only just onscreen but in stores, affiliate marketing and theme parks for decades to come. This was probably a done deal a while ago, and they're just now making it public and official.

Hide the rest of his life from episodes 1-3.....
Tons and tons of storyline, I spent a good year or so hunting down the books, and reading them. takes me all of 5 hours or so to read a 300 pg novel.

Well, he is still the God of Flannel.

Stay the hell away from Indiana Jones if he knows what's good for him.
The best Star Wars product out there is the animated Clone Wars series. The rest is a steaming pile of bad dialog and poor character development. It was awesome to a 10yr old in 1977 but holy berkeleying E36 M3 has the ship sailed on that memory.
So, 4 billion and change for one good cartoon and a legacy you can't run far enough from even if you re-released Song of the South as cover fire.

Care to share in 50 words or less?
In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
Disagree. The Zahn trilogy was very good (and should probably be Episodes VII, VIII, and IX if we're honest) and the X-Wing/Rogue Squadron stuff (especially the comics and taking Coruscant) were very well done as well. Clone Wars is also very good. A lot of the side-board stories that came out for concurrence with the original three are also good (Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina, etc).
But otherwise, yeah, the rest of them are pretty horrible. Especially the Dark Empire and Young Jedi/Jedi Academy stuff. And that one book with the planet full of force witches that made a combo of Yoda, Vader, and the Emperor look like a weak sauce apprentice was crap beyond belief. All of that can be flushed.

My understanding is Indy was included in the deal, so we may get "Disney-fied" Indy movies as well.
I agree with JG - when they annouced new movies starting in 2015 my first thought was, "That soon? This has apparently been in negotiations for some time..."
I have guarded optimism when it comes to the new movies... we'll see. To be honest, I don't mind Jar Jar Binks as much as the actors they got to play Anakin. Especially in number 3, any scene he's in is painful to watch.

Nope, that would give away to many plot points and I don't think it can be done!
I think this Disney buyout could possibly be a good move, especially for Star Wars. Lucas has done more to damage the Star Wars brand in recent years than make it better. The prequel trilogy is borderline unwatchable for me, and the constant "remastering" of the original trilogy got on my nerves. I am hopeful that they can do something cool, especially since Disney turned Marvel around. The Avengers was really good!
I have no clue what they could possibly have planned for Indiana Jones, but I hope it doesn't include Shia LeBouf. Man, I can't stand that guy. Harrison Ford is getting up there, so my guess is that they will go back to the Young Indiana Jones days and do some prequels if they do anything at all.
