If you do the inspection for free anyway, why bother trying to talk them into the $20 inspection? Why not just promote your shop as offering a free basic safety inspection for all cars in for repair?

Because then you get every yahoo coming in just for the free stuff, and people who come in expecting free stuff never spend any money. It's people spending money that keeps the lights on and the paychecks flowing, after all.

When we charge for a check-out, if they get the repair within 30 days, it's refunded. So it's essentially still free, but it eliminates the riff-raff.

That is why even an old ex-BMW guy like me runs like Carl Lewis at the sight of a V12 E38, no matter how cheap it is.

The only thing worse than a poseur with a used car is a poseur that's killing a new one...
