This guy wandered into my friend's yard and stayed. He has a very worn collar and a homemade tag that is not tracable to any agency in New York or Vermont. He's about 6 months old, tall and very strong. At first Elaine thought he was part Great Dane because of the way his toe nails went (she already has a Dane and a Lab) but the Vet said he was some kind of hound mix. He doesn't bark, he bays.

Elaine claims he's a big baby in the house but judging by the way he's comfortable on the furniture and in her bed, well.... maybe her house rules are different. He's very strong for being so skinny. I want to adopt him but Mrs. 914 says he's too much dog. He's a sniffer and a chaser outside, he's also a cat eater. I thought if I got him nuetered and into some dog sport competition he would calm down. I'm not getting the chance.

He weighs about 65 pounds and I don't have to bend over to touch his back. Love brindle!

If you think you need some canine excitement in your life, lemme know. I'll let Elaine interview you,

Sadly, this sort of thing is happening more and more. With home foreclosures, people are just turning their dogs loose because they can't keep them.

Have a friend who had a GORGEOUS German Shepherd that she found. Literally opened to the door to her car and the dog jumped in. It is an incredibly sweet, smart, and well trained dog.

sigh And now she's worried she can't handle it and looking to get rid of it. She got it spayed, and the vets told her to keep the dog confined and to not have it exercise for 10-14 days! After a day and a half, locked in a small room, it tore everything up. When it got a chance to go through the back door, it started doing laps around the back yard.

Now this friend thinks she has a problem dog that she can't take care of. Hello! News Flash! This is a young, high energy dog! It needs something to do. Keep it locked up and it will go stir crazy and find something to do.

If we lived closer and I showed my wife these pictures, we'd have 3 dogs....

Sorry we can't help - too far away.

Indeed, that's a proper-looking dog. If you were closer, he'd be coming home with me. 'Course, that means I'd have to trade a bike for something I could hook a sidecar to, so he could ride to the shop with me.

Kind of off topic? Is it really necessary to confine a dog for 10 to 14 days after it's spayed or nuetered? Did this have something to do with it's size?

Where I live in Memphis is on the outskirts of the city. If I walk out to get in my car there's a reasonable chance I'll see a stray dog. If I walk to the "7-11" a few blocks away, a dog will follow me home. Unfortunately, not only are people too lazy(?) to take their dogs to the pound, they are too lazy to drive them "out to the country"....NOT that I condon that.

The reasoning is because it got stitches, and the vet didn't want the dog to tear the stitches, or something like that. Apparently the vet told her that just taking it for gentle walks would aggravate the stitches. Yeah, sure. Walks will be far worse than when the dog goes stir crazy and starts bouncing off the walls.

My girlfriend, who used to volunteer with the SPCA a lot, doesn't get it either. Dogs get sent home to families a day or two after being spayed or neutered. You know families don't keep their new dog quiet and confined during that time.

When a dog does tear their stitches open they can start bleeding pretty badly, and not always where you can see it and do something about it quickly. As a vet tech, I was always in favor of using a mild seditive on certain breeds that would go stir crazy after surgery, but the vet I worked for never did it that I was aware of.

This dog had already had the stitches and was moving around the back yard for several days before it got confined to the bedroom. I guess there was a bit of a problem, and my friend overreacted. I think a little bit of light, controlled activity (walks) would have prevented this problem.

It sure is a sweet dog. If I had the opportunity, I would adopt this dog from her. This friend loves pets, but she keeps having trouble understanding that this is a dog, and not a person.
