Our house was built in 1978 and has a built in outdoor grill that shares the chimney stack with the fireplace. I'm having a problem with water penetrating the brick then freezing and popping the face of the brick off.
First off I'd like to redirect the melt water from the roof but I'm not really sure how to go about this. I've attached a picture of the roof to chimney junction point. The water is hitting the flashing then flowing down the brick surface. I also plan to use a clear water seal product on the bricks. Is there any reason not to do this and is there a product that is better than the others? The top of the grill has bricks stacked on edge that are becoming damaged as well. Should I strip these off and create a small roof of some type or will just repairing the mortar joints and using the sealant work?
