My buddy always said California was the land of fruits and nuts.
I imagine I am going to get the poop beat out of me so I apologize in advance.

It's a plain fact.
Remember also that if one in five admits it, the real numbers are probably like one in two. Or even 100%!
My Mom has four sisters, two of whom raised their families in Cali. I have a lot of cousins who have experienced (or created) turmoil for their lives, but the west coast variety hold the trump card in every comparison.
California = The Granola State; what ain't fruits and nuts, is flakes.
Sorry for weilding the broad-brush, but as a southener, it's fun to push-back with a bit of stereotyping.
New Yorkers are worse. I refuse to set foot in that state. (No offense to any present here, or anyone from Buffalo. They seem ok)
Talked to my dad last night in the PRC. His riding lawn mower is broke. He can't find a replacement that will fit through the gate because CALIFORNIA HAS LAWS AGAINST RIDING MOWERS WITH NARROW DECKS. I'm sorry, a state that finds it necessary to regulate the width of riding lawn mower decks has completely lost it.
that is the dumbest thing i've ever heard, why would there be a regulation on how narrow a riding mower deck can be? talk about a waste of space
I'm sure it's because they want to force people with moderate-size lawns to use walkbehinds or pushmowers, therefore getting them to excercise rather than sitting on their asses while mowing.
Legislative social engineering FTML.
guy I work with.. his father lives out in the desert of California.. the state is putting a water meter on his well so they can charge him for the water he uses

Soon they'll have 'em wearing a MAF sensor and charge for every breath!

that would probably be the most erratic water meter (at least as far as working correctly consistently ) in the history of state sponsored thievery ...
Congress May Double Penalties For Pot Brownies
A bill has just reached the floor of the United States Senate that would double penalties for any edible products combined with medical marijuana in California and the 13 other states that provide compassionate relief for patients.
The worst part is that the bill was written and sponsored by Dianne Feinstein, a Democratic senator from California!

Last I saw, it looks like legalization may pass in November....
We just got word from Wilwood that California no longer allows anodizing, so their calipers will now be a different color.
My dad always said the best thing we could do would be to saw off California, New York and Florida and let them float out to sea.
Dunno. Don't care. Say what you will about CA, but we still have some of the best food, best beer, and best race tracks in the country.
Keep your sanity. I'll keep Infineon, Thunderhill, and Laguna Seca.
By definition "Californian" indicates mental problems. 4 out of 5 seem to believe that they are O.K.? Not that some of the quirks aren't useful or amusing...I just don't understand some of it!
A friends daughter (San Pedro) was arguing about getting a tattoo... "Nicks friend Tapeworm has the same tat on his neck!!!! I just want to express my individuality just like all my friends!!!!!" I told her she suffered from delusions of insanity.

Yeah, some of us like visiting them . What riles me is that a state that should be prosperous has teetering on the verge of bankruptcy for what - decades?

Food, spirits and racing do not make for sound fiscal policy. They certainly won't mean much when the state begs for a bail-out that requires national taxpayer funding.

it's only one of the world's largest economies.. it dwarfs most countries for GNP

Fixed that for ya.
My sister moved to CA a couple years ago. And yea she's nuts.

Not quite. It's kind of the same situation as what's going on nationally. We're really far in the red, but have such a massive economy it just keeps moving.
I blame a huge amount of our problems and absurdities on the proposition system. Contrary to its design, it allows pretty much any special interest to pass any b.s. if it can throw enough money at it. So the uninformed voting masses vote for anything that "sounds good".
I see a lot of problems that can be linked strait back to the 1978 Prop 13, that capped property tax. Although well meaning, it hamstrung a significant and stable tax revenue, forcing governments to rely on much more volatile tax revenues (primarily sales tax). I also see it leading to much of our housing market absurdity because it dissuades people from moving and increasing their property taxes. That causes housing prices to go up, because it takes more money to get people out of a house. That further dissuades people from moving.
In short, people get to vote to spend money willy-nilly but that we can't be taxed to pay for it all.
Our legislature are a pack of idiots too who can't seem to realize that, eventually, you have to cut something.
